Project Intervention in Numeracy

GRADE FOUR

INTRODUCTION:

Arithmetic is the fundamental of mathematics that includes the

operations of numbers. These operations are addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. Arithmetic is one of the important branches of
mathematics, that lays the foundation of the subject “Maths”, for students.
We use these basic operations of arithmetic in our daily lives so it’s very
important that we learn and love mathematics. However, many pupils are
finding it hard to solve even a simple operation and eventually ends hating
math subjects. Some students dislike math because they think it’s dull.
They don’t get excited about numbers and formulas the way they get excited
about history, science, languages, or other subjects that are easier to
personally connect to. They see math as abstract and irrelevant figures that
are difficult to understand. Another reason is that student haven’t mastered
the basics. Without learning the basics well, they cannot understand the
math lessons in the higher classes. Our national math curriculum is
designed in a way that children have to face more complex math as they get
to higher classes which cannot be done without knowing the basics that
they need to learn in the lower classes.

Because of the pandemic that hinders the children from going to

school to attend normal class, learning mathematics was greatly affected.
The basics that they should learn in school was not taught to them face to
face in lower grades. We all know that modules or distance learning is not
that effective especially for pupils that belongs to the primary level or key
stage 1. As a result, they reached the next key stage not equipped with basic
knowledge in mathematics operations.

OBJECTIVES:

To establish pupils active participation in solving arithmetic

To develop their love and interest in Mathematics

Problem Statement
Based on the results of the First Periodical Test in Mathematics, 18
out of 35 or 51% of Grade 4 pupils at Barualte Elementary School do not
meet the following learning competencies. The table below shows the least
mastered skills of the 18 pupils that did not meet the competencies.

Project Intervention
Project ALPHA (Actively Learning and Participating in
Highlighting Arithmetic) was introduced to help develop their love and
interest on the basics of arithmetic and establish active participation while
learning the subject. The teacher used various strategies to teach them the
basics of multiplication and division such as selecting randomly who will
recite the table of multiplication before the class starts. This also serve as
their energizer or ice breaker. Pupils need to be ready every time because
they do not know when they will be called to recite. It was exciting and at
the same time challenging for them. Worksheets and other activities were
also given to them during remediation. Games, songs, and videos about
math were also incorporated into the lesson.
Here are the photos gathered during the implementation of the
project.

Result of the First Semester

After three months utilization of the project ALPHA, the teacher gave
the respondents another test comprising items with the least mastered
competencies mentioned in the problem statement. 8 out of 18 pupils or
44% mastered the skills.

Since the 100% percent target of the program was not met, the
teacher will continue to use the intervention year-round until all the
respondents mastered the basics skills in arithmetic.
