HomeAid Project seeks to strengthen parent’s involvement in children’s education in
Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental by introducing to them effective teaching strategies
that they can apply in a home set-up. In collaboration with the San Antonio Elementary
School, Talaban Elementary School, City Social Welfare Development, Parent-Teacher
Association, Schools Division of Himamaylan City, Local Government Units, and Non-
Government Organizations, the parents will undergo a year-long training on teaching
PROJECT strategies, reading material formulation, and skill development. HomeAid is a series of
SUMMARY capacity building program for the parents in collaboration with the teachers and other
stakeholders in the period of one year. Three phases are considered in this prototype.
Phase 1 is a capacity building program; Phase 2 is the coaching sessions for the parents.
Lastly, Phase 3 is the assessment and evaluation. These components promote parent-
children, teacher-parent, teacher-student, parent-school, parent-community, and
school-community sense of ownership, co-ownership, and co-creation of the project.
The result of the Rapid Area Assessment in 2020 in a barangay in Himamaylan City shows that parents have
participated rarely in the reading performance of their children. Among the participating groups (parents,
teachers, and stakeholders), parents got the rare participation. Thus, the project focuses on the parents. The
demographic profile of the parents whose children are in Grades 4-6 was classified according to economic-
status, highest educational attainment, and reading programs attended. Parents who availed highest
educational attainment were as follows: three (3) attained elementary level, fifteen (15) attained high school
level, while only one (1) was in college level, and one (1) was in post-graduate studies. However, only six (6)
reading programs were attended by the parents. Most of the participants were the mothers in which there
were eighteen (18) mothers and two (2) fathers. In terms of their socio-economic status, fourteen (14) parents
received the monthly income of 3,000 and below; there were five (5) those who received 3,001 to 6,000; only
one (1) received 6,001 to 9,000; and zero received 9,000 and above. Parents with monthly income of 3,000 and
below dominated the survey. Moreover, fishing, sugarcane work, small businesses, and beach resort operation
are the available resources which are also considered as the key challenges faced by the parents especially in
this time of health crisis. The parents stress their work as their reason to have rare participation with their
children since they do not have enough time to engage with their children’s educational development at home.
Meanwhile, some parents have few books at home, but others do not have. Also, parents have struggles in
terms of teaching to their children due to children’s playing habit and short span of interest. Among the
challenges faced by the parents is their work which fails them to help and guide their children in learning
development. Thus, parents are pivotal in transforming the state of the organization and community, hence,
the project focuses on the parents. To create a strong involvement with the parents, teachers, pupils, and
other stakeholders, HomeAid project will be initiated and widen in scope. This project aims to strengthen
parent’s involvement in children’s education in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental by introducing to them
effective teaching strategies that they can apply in a home set-up. Minimum of eighty (80) parents from two
areas in Himamaylan City will be the participants of the project. In the implementation of the project, parents
will undergo Three Phases: The Capacity Building program, the Coaching Sessions, and the Assessment and
Evaluation from November 2021 to November 2022 including preparatory and post activities. Phase 1 focuses
on the 10-day training that will be held every Saturday from March to May 2020. Each session will take 3 hours
in a conducive setting observing and following the minimum health and safety protocols. Parents will be
introduced to the following: Introduction to Project, Understanding Children's Behavior in Learning
Development, Roles of the Parents in the New Normal Education, Teaching Approaches and Strategies in a
Home Set-up, Reading Approaches for Home Learning, Building A Good Study Habit, and Learning and Teaching
Material Formulation. Along the implementation of the Phase 1, project monitoring will be established through
the HomeAid Observation and Monitoring (HOM) Tool. Thus, the parents must comply 80% of the total
attendance to receive a certificate of completion. On the other hand, Phase 2 is the Coaching Sessions. The
Coaching Sessions will run for three months from June to August 2022. Each parent will be assigned to 2
teachers (internal & external coaches). The parents and the coach will have 20-hour requirement in completing
the coaching session in three-month duration. It depends to the coach and the parent to set for a coaching
session in their convenient schedule whether via SMS text, video call, messenger chat, phone call, face-to-face,
or other means of communication. To monitor the coaching sessions, each coach will be given the coaching
guide template reflecting the challenges faced and solutions offered towards home learning/teaching.
Moreover, educational services like learning material donation will be done in this phase. Finally, the Phase 3
which is the Assessment and Evaluation from September to November 2022. Based on the HOM Tool, Coaching
Guide, feedbacking, and parent’s children academic performance, the project will be assessed and evaluated to
further enhance the project implementation. Finally, to raise awareness of the project, publicity materials will
be released online/offline. HBONI and HomeAid Facebook Page and Instagram account will be utilized and will
be shared to the members of the organization and partners.
