documentary will consist of the History of Music Videos. Specifically, through the 70’s to
the present day. These are song such as ‘September’ by Earth Wind and Fire, and ‘Somebody
that you used to Know’ by Gotye. Also, how social medias have affected it. These are the
main topics but there will be smaller things to focus on with in these few minutes I have.

Introduction:

Hello I am James… In this short documentary I will talk about the history of music videos.

The History

In 1950, a machine called The Scopitone was created to advertise and show the work of
creators.

In 1964, bands such as, the Beatles and The Moody Blues would use these machines for some
of their music.

In 1965, The Beatles would use these machines to aid in their growth and broadcast the music
out to the world.

In 1967, a director known as Michael Lindsay-Hogg, would direct The Beatles’ movie, Let It
Be. He would also go onto directing The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.
The Beatles would also go onto writing and directing their ‘Magical Mystery Circus’, this
would also show everyone how inventive they could be.

In 1972, David Bowie would show off his skills and create the strange music videos he is
well known for.

How Has Media and Technology Influenced Music Videos?

In 1975, Queen created a new promotional video of their new single ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
on BBC’s top of the pops. This video introduced other musicians into the world of
broadcasting and media.
In 1980, David Bowies ‘Ashes to Ashes’ music video cost $582,000. Equivalent to $3.3
million in 2023. This video became iconic due to its unique and unnatural look making it
significant in the change of music videos.
In 1981 comes MTV, a channel that is focused on only music. It aired ‘Video Killed the
Radio Star’ by The Buggles, creating a 24 hour-a-day trend. Most musicians such as, Michael
Jackson and Duran Duran gained popularity through this outlet. This era is also where
directors start playing a huge role in the video creation. Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ was also
first shown on this channel. Viewers were shocked to find a 14-minute-long music video on a
new service. Now comes the present day. Through years of technological development we
have these three main sources of music. Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music. There are of
course other platforms, but these are the big 3.
Music is now able to be shared with the press of a button. There is now a vast sea of videos
from lyric to official music videos to remixes. Sharing music has never been easier.
Software can also allow us to create 3D models and track movement to create realistic
characters in videos. A band who has used this technique are called Coldplay.

Main Focus – Evolution

1. The Bee Gees. This bands music videos mainly consist of a grainy and old look and
are all mostly medium and long shots. As the video goes on, we realise the scenery is
in an abandoned town. This matches with the theme of ‘Staying Alive’. There is also
not much variety in camera techniques and software techniques.

2. In the music video ‘September’ by Earth Wind and Fire they started to use software
effects in their videos. The effects are unique, and it gained popularity and interest
from all around. They used an effect using video feedback which is a simple
technique but very effective.

3. Pump Up the Jam is one of the most edited in its era. It consists of explosive editing
which inspired others to do the same. The effects are very random, consisting of
strobing to overlaying. Most of the camera shots are clos ups.

4. Their music video is more like a preview of the song and shows what they’re like on
stage. Consists of long shots, medium shots, close ups, tracking and panning. Here are
some of my own versions of these…

5. One More Time is heavily inspired by cartoons and anime. Daft Punks music is
always complimented with an animated, sci-fi video. This idea adds to their on-stage
personas as two musical robots. Not many creators used animation for their videos as
it was too time consuming or complicated.

6. In November of 2015, the band Coldplay released a fully CGI and motion captured
music video involving a band of monkeys. Not many people dared to create such a
project but this video shows the initiative and creativity some creators have. The
camera techniques used in this video are: Establishing shots, long and medium shots,
close ups and tracking.

7. Created in 2023, the rapper BBNO$ released a music video for his recent album, Bag
or Die. It is in an old fashioned style with the use of monochrome. The camera
techniques are: Close ups, medium and long shots, panning and establishing shots.
The editing on this is random, consisting of layering and glowing effects on certain
areas, mainly the platform he is standing on. In one scene he has been duplicated to
have a huge group of himself surrounding him.

Conclusion
So, my question was how have music videos changed over the years? I have found out that
technology has helped improve the outcomes of the videos drastically. Whether it comes to
camera techniques or software techniques in post editing, they have varied in the years.
Media has also had a huge impact on people getting their work out there. With the creation of
MTV, music was so simple to broadcast and better yet with Spotify and YouTube.
