What is Sports &


Performance Psychology?
Sports psychology is the study of how
psychological factors influence sports, athletic
performance, exercise, and physical activity.

They help athletes utilize psychology to improve


their sports performance and mental well-being.

They also help regular people learn how to enjoy


sports and learn to stick to an exercise program.

They utilize exercise and athletics to enhance


people’s lives and well-being.
What is Sports Psychology
Sport psychology is a proficiency that uses
psychological knowledge and skills to address
optimal performance and well-being of athletes,
developmental and social aspects of sports
participation, and systemic issues associated with
sports settings and organizations. - APA

Sport Psychology interventions are designed to


assist athletes and other sports participants (e.g.,
coaches, administrators, parents) from a wide array
of settings, levels of competition and ages, ranging
from recreational youth participants to professional
and Olympic athletes to master’s level performers.
History of Sports Psychology
Coleman Griffith is considered to be the ‘‘father” of sport
psychology. He created and developed the first sport
psychology laboratory based at the University of Illinois in
1925. He was also hired by the Chicago Cubs baseball team and
acted as their consulting sport psychologist in 1938.

The International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP) was


established in1965 and by the 1970s, sports psychology had
been introduced to university course offerings throughout North
America.

By the 1980s, sports psychology began to explore how


psychology could be used to improve athletic performance, as
well as how exercise could be utilized to improve mental well-
being and lower stress levels.
Specialized knowledge
includes:
Theory and research in social, historical, cultural and
developmental foundations of sport psychology.
Issues and techniques of sport specific psychological
assessment and mental skills training for performance
enhancement and participation satisfaction.
Clinical and counselling issues with athletes.
Organizational and systemic aspects of sport consulting.
Developmental and social issues related to sport
participation.
Bio-behavioural bases of sport and exercise (e.g.,
exercise physiology, motor learning, sports medicine).
Specific knowledge of training science and technical
requirements of sport and competition, standardised
rules, etc.

variety of disciplines to maximize
health and wellness among athletes,
coaches, teams, parents of athletes,
and fitness professionals.
