Dipadarsanam
Translation
"I salute the One-who is the lamplight that· brings auspiciousnes. prosperity, good health,
abundance of wealth, and the destruction of the intellect's enemy.
Brief · Explanation
This p_rayer is chanted before lighting the lamp. Light is considered a symbol of
auspiciousness, prosperity; and abundance in many cultures. Light brings with it .
brightness, but how· does it "destroy the intellect·s enemy"? The intellect's enemy is
considered to be .ignorance; its ·arch-enemy is self-ignorance. Ignorance is likened ·to
darkness; knowledge is likened to light. A.room may be full of objects and one's sight
may be sharp, but if the room is ·in-darkness, the objects canp.ot be perceived. Light
·removes the darkness and makes it-possible to see the objects. In the_ same manner, the
self (subject) is ever-present in one's experiences. bu:t,_ due· to ignorance, its essential
nature is unknown. As light removes darkness, knwledge of the self removes ignorance
( and allows one to discover happiness as the essential nature of the self.

Tra nslation
Lord, kindly forgive all the omissions and commissions born of my eyes, ears, mind, and
organ of speech, or done by my hands and feet, and the omissions and commissions in the
performance of my duties, either enjoined or prohibited. Glory to you, Mahadeva, the one·
who is the ocean of kindness, and the cause of happiness.
Brief Explanation
Before g-0ing to sleep, one ends the day with this prayer. One asks the Lord for
forgiveness for inappropriate actions that one may have knowingly or nknowingly done
during the day. These actions may be physical, verbal, or mental. Prayer itself is an
action that has its own result in the form of pul)ya, which neutralizes the papas born of
errors of omission and commission. Prayer is an appreciation of one's limitations, and a
request for the blessings of the Lord for inner· maturity and strength.
