MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH INVESTIGATION

SINCE THE OUTBREAK OF COVID-19: PEOPLE’S MENTAL STATES DURING THE

TIME OF PANDEMIC
NORWYN GYANN FAITH P. BULUSAN

The world currently faces a global pandemic which had triggered the mental beings of the
public since the outbreak. The psychological problems under the worldwide spread of
coronavirus have steadily increased the public healthcare burden. Emerging research assessing
the mental health implications of COVID-19 has identified a heightened prevalence of moderate-
to-severe self-reported depressive and anxious symptomatology among the general public,
reflecting the widespread effects of uncertainty and health-related fears (Gubric et al., 2020). It
appears to be that the disruption of the current crisis is considered to be a major factor in
negatively affecting mental health and created new obstacles for people already suffering from
psychological disorders.
It had posed a threat to societies’ mental health, when only in the early stages of the
pandemic – and the first lockdown on April 2020, the number of young people suffering from
anxiety doubled from 13 % to 24%. The anxiety levels of the people have not been reduced even
when the lockdown restrictions have been eased back in June. The number constantly increases
and it is expected to perform the same movement in the future as long as the virus runs free.
People have experienced various pandemic-related circumstances namely loss of income,
isolation, stress, bereavement, all of which may eventually contribute to poor mental health. The
impact of these mental health illnesses can highly influence the development of society towards
different aspects.
According to the study of YaMei (2004) about psychological outcomes for people who
had been quarantined and not quarantined were compared. A hospital staff under quarantine who
might had come contact into SARS eventually found out that having quarantined (for 9 days) is a
predictive factor symptom of acute stress disorder. In the same study, quarantined
healthcare workers were notably more likely to experience exhaustion, isolation from others,
anxiety while dealing with febrile patients, irritability, insomnia, low concentrating and
indecisiveness, declining job efficiency, and unwillingness to work or contemplation of
resignation.
The economic setbacks amidst crisis seemed to have a number of interconnected
influences across various aspects but numerous studies also puts employment-related difficulties,
income loss, generally economic insecurities serves as factors affecting mental health.
The study of Cao (2020) notes that the pandemic also had a huge impact towards
students’ education and well-being. Based on their sample report, almost 25% are experiencing
anxiety symptoms which rose concerns in regards to academic disruptions, economic effects, and
general impacts on everyday life. As stated by Wickens (2011) according to his research that
explores the impact of academic delays to students of all levels, it is reasonable to conclude that

the students may have felt reduced motivation towards academic studies, increased pressure on
learning independently and adjustment to their changed daily routines. On that account, due to
rising stressors and the reduced ability to depend on typical coping mechanisms, hence, the topic
requires further investigation.
Several studies have concluded that the mental health of the public under the pandemic
is adversely impacted and the major factor that contributed to the deteriorating public mental
health burdens is the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 virus. Consequently, the study of
Panchal et al (2021) reported that the increased mental illnesses are associated with economic
downturns, school closures, and decreased employment rate. Although, policymakers continue to
discuss actions to mitigate the burdens of coronavirus pandemic on metal health, the need of
further study is considered essential considering the consequences for it is still uncertain when
the COVID-19 pandemic will subside.
