Statement of Problem
What are the effects of Water Pollution on residence in the Spanish Town area.
Reason for selecting the area of research
The reason for the researcher selecting this area of research was because of his curiosity upon
knowing why there was often a constant blockage with the drainage canal within the
environment, why residents were constantly complaining about the situation and the
researcher also want to discover a solution as to how the residence within his area can all co-
operate and solve this problem of water pollution.
Method of investigation

In order to collect data from the survey, the researcher decides to use the questionnaire
method. This method was chosen because it allows for data to be collected from a large
number of persons in a short amount of time and it promotes confidentiality. The
questionnaire will be investigating the issues leading to water pollution in the Spanish Town
area. The researcher will distribute a total of twenty-five (25) questionnaires to carry out this
investigation. The researcher will use random selection to select the respondents. Random
selection is a form of sampling where a representative group of research participants is selected
from a larger group by chance.

Two advantages of using a questionnaire is ,it generates quick results,it allows anonymity.
Two disadvantages of questionnaire is, no assurance of honest answers,it can cause
misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

Procedures for Data collection

The researcher carried out an investigation in the Spanish Town area to

find out the effects water pollution has on the people within the
Community..

The sample was chosen using a random selection method. The lots of
residents were written on pieces of paper and placed in a bag which was
shaken. The researcher used the first twenty-five lot numbers that was
pulled out of the bag to carry out the investigation. These questionnaires
were distributed in one day and lasted one day to complete. Out of the
twenty-five questionnaires distributed all were retrieved upon
completion, these were used to complete the report.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
The introduction of impurities into water which adversely affects humans, animals
and aquatic lives is referred to as water pollution.
It is caused mainly by the following:
⮚ Industrial Waste
⮚ Domestic influent
⮚ Sewage
⮚ Fertilizer and Pesticides
⮚ Oils spills
One consequence of water pollution is solid waste accumulating in canals and
drains contributing to flooding.
In the analysis it was seen that the main factor responsible for contributing to water
pollution is the unsanitary residents which was 50%. However, the diseases with
the area.
The analysis shows that 56% of garbage is not collected according to a proper
schedule. In most cases whether garbage is placed into plastic bags or garbage cans
or other containers are left for a long period outside these residences, this allows
for the scattering of the garbage by dogs and cats searching for food.

In the analysis 68% of the residence is affected by water pollution monthly from
time to time. This is a major issue which needs to be attended by residents and the
authorities.
\
STATEMENT OF FINDINGS
The survey has revealed several deficiencies which leads to the cause of water
pollution in the SPANISH TOWN drainage canal.
⮚ 12% said garbage is dumped weekly, while 88% said garbage is dumped
daily. According to the survey the garbage is dumped into the drainage canal
because it is not collected at all.

⮚ Cases of dead animals are not collected by the garbage collector therefore
they are thrown into the canal

⮚ In most cases the garbage collectors do not pick up scattered garbage, so it

finds its way into the drainage canal.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The most important recommendation is that in order to maintain a healthy environment in the
Spanish town area, each resident, the garbage collectors and the government must play their role
to alleviate many of the problems caused by water pollution.

⮚ In the efforts sign should be placed where garbage disposal should not take place.

⮚ The local government authorities should set up a program to educate the residents
about the proper garbage disposal, this should happen by organizing a community
meeting and the consequences. Hence residents and authorities will both work
together to deal with this problem.

Recommendation

In order to solve the problem, the researcher could:

⮚ Help to build signs showing the consequences of water pollution and it will also
indicate to them that it is illegal to dump garbage into the canal.

⮚ Also print flyers to distribute the residence to educate them about garbage disposal.

CONCLUSION
Water pollution is caused by multiple things that can ultimately harm not only
humans, animals, plants, and the environment but it can also affect the economy.
Even though it is caused by multiple things, there are multiple ways to prevent it
and treat it. Water is an important resource that needs to be taken care of and
treasured. We all know that water pollution can affect our health badly and
seriously. It can cause such sickness and diseases that will badly affect our health.
We all know how important water is. Water is essential to our body. Neither we
nor every living thing can survive without water. And so therefore, we should
keep, protect, save, and help prevent our waters from being polluted. We should act
as early as now, we should save rivers, seas and oceans, and other bodies of water
because we will also bear the burden of this problem. I think we have to change out
habits because the water is a natural resource very important and if we follow the
same way till now, one day maybe our sons wake up and they wont have water to
drink.
Reflection

After doing this S.B.A i have learnt more about the effect of water pollution. After having done
research, I have learnt that there are many things that I did not know. I have come into contact
with news involving water pollution, but have never thought much about it. However, after
researching, i learnt about all the impacts that an event such as an oil spill can cause, such as how
hard it is to clean up the spill, the high cost the methods of cleanup take, the effects on the
environment, such as destroying the areas marine life, and how it can even affect the livelihood
of fishermen that depend on the are for a living. I have also seen how religion and beliefs can
pollute the water to a ridiculous extent, endangering people in the process. The river Ganges had
been heavily polluted , with people dumping waste from making leather, untreated sewage into
the waters, where some even cremate bodies of the deceased in the river. Despite all this, people
still use the water to carry out activities such as bathing. This can endanger the health of the
people living on the river as the water would get really dirty, and can make people sick by
spreading diseases. I realized from this S.B.A that we have to protect and maintain the
cleanliness of our water bodies, as they are vital for our survival.
