ASSIGNMENT No. 3

Course Title: Electrical Machine Course Code: EEN-219

Class: BEE – 5B CLO: 3
Course Instructor: DR. MUHAMMAD RAZA Date: 08-Dec-2022
Due Date: 09-Jan-2022 Max. Marks: 20 Points

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Attempt all questions

2. This is an individual effort task
3. Assignment should be done only on A4 size paper
4. Assignment should be submitted on LMS in due time.
5. Individual Viva will be taken after assignment submission

The assignment is designed in a way to enable students to solve the complex engineering problem.
Following characteristics of complex engineering problem are targeted.

WP 1 Depth of Knowledge Required

WP 3 Depth of Analysis Required

Objective:

Design the system to operate the load of 60kW at 180 Hz using wound-rotor motor of rated 30kW
power, 60Hz and 880rpm.

System Description:

A conventional wound rotor motor may be used as a frequency converter to generate a frequency
different from that of utility company. The stator of the wound-rotor machine is connected to the
utility line, and the rotor is driven at an appropriate speed by a squirrel cage induction motor as
shown in Figure 1.
Considering the supply line frequency as 60Hz and 110Vrms, it is required to determine the power
demand from the utility grid and the rating of the squirrel cage induction motor.
Validate the design by performing the simulation in Simscape or any other software suitable for
analysis. The analysis should contain the information of motor selection and frequency converter
(F) such as the speed of the induction motor (M) to drive the frequency converter, the power of the
induction motor (M), active power delivered to the stator of the frequency converter.
Will the frequency converter overheat under these conditions?
Write a detail report that must present the torque speed characteristics of the motors.
