Research Project Guidelines

Gonçalo Figueira
Online version, last edit: December 2022

Here you can find a list of suggestions to guide you in the process of structuring and writing
the Research Project. This structure is not mandatory and may be adjusted depending on
your specific project.

Introduction
• Move from the general to the specific: start by explaining why the global research
area is important (fundamental science, applied science, societal challenges) the go
into the particular principle, concept or technique that you are addressing (why is it
important and better than others, what are its applications, what results has it
motivated).
• You can also describe the current perspectives, challenges and problems.
• Finish by describing the particular viewpoint that you are addressing in your project
and the expected goals.

State-of-the-art
• Perform a survey of the relevant literature, not just limited to the suggested
references that were provided.
• Identify the most important publications and contributions and explain why they are
important.
• You may write this section in a timeline manner, starting with the pioneering results
and ending with the current state-of-the-art.
• Here you may also discuss further on the perspectives, challenges and problems
mentioned in the introduction, providing a more detailed description.
• Make sure that you include the relevant references. You can use the references
provided as a starting point to look for more references.

Methods
Describe in detail the method that you used for the project. Some examples:
• Description of a technique evaluating a particular aspect
• Comparative literature survey on a specific application of a technique
• Describing a technique by using a given formulation e.g. Gaussian beams or ABCD
matrices
• Development of a computer code to simulate a physical principle or an application
• Developing a simple physical experiment that reproduces a technique
• Finding a supervisor who works in the chosen topic and getting direct information on
a specific application
• Picking a specific aspect and suggesting an alternative method to address it

Results and discussion

Based on what you have done, present your findings and discuss them. Evaluate your work
in a critical way, its scope and limitations: what was included, what was left out, what can be
done in the future. Are your results scientifically solid? Reflect on the kind of questions and
remarks that you might get asked and try to answer them in advance.

Conclusion
Write an overall conclusion to your work, from the point of view of what you have learned
and accomplished. Do a quick review of the main points and results from the previous
sections. In case you had assistance from other people or institutions in your project, you
should also thank them in this section.

References
List carefully the references used, in the order that they appear in the main text. Use a
consistent format for the same type of references (e.g. papers, proceedings, books,
websites, videos etc).
Any references should be properly acknowledged, that is, if you cite work from other
researchers make sure that you indicate the appropriate reference.

General suggestions
Allow yourself time to gather all the references, read time and develop your project. Do not
leave this for the last week.
Define the overall structure and contents of the project before you start writing. You may
have to choose some things to put in and others to leave out, focus on what is more
important for your topic.
Look for human help if you need to: get in touch with researchers in the area, explain your
project and ask them to have a chat or to visit their facilities.

Notes on plagiarism
A well-done research project involves gathering information from several sources: articles,
books, websites, videos and so on. Then you need to distill and process this information to
fit the goals of your project. This means that you should select what is relevant and write
using your own words, instead of just copying from the references. Note that
