Rules for forming questions Verbs such as can, are, is, was, have are called auxiliary or helping

verbs.

1. What happens to the position of the subject (e.g. ‘you’) and the auxiliary verb when we
form a question? The subject and the auxiliary verb change places (aux verb + subject…)

Great!! The auxiliary verb goes before the subject.

2. How do we form questions with the present simple and past simple?

Present simple: Do/Does + subject + verb + complement +?

Past simple: Was/Were/Did + subject + verb + complement +?

Very complete answer! Bare in mind that we don’t always need a complement in questions

For instance: Did you run?

Ask an appropriate question for each response:

1. I’m reading a book about travel.

What are you reading?

2. I went to a party.

Where did you go last night?

3. I’m meeting her at 5 o’clock.

What time is the date? What time are you meeting her?

4. I arrived yesterday.
When did you arrive?

5. I was drinking orange juice.

What were you drinking this morning?

6. I get to work by train.

How are you going to work every day? How do you get to work (every day)?

We use present simple for everyday actions.

How are you going to go/get to work next Monday?

7. I’m staying here for two weeks.

How long - ? How long are (aux “be”) you staying here? You are staying here for 2 weeks.

How long: Por cuánto tiempo

How much time

8. I finished my homework an hour ago.

When did you finish your homework?
