CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Ajay Singh/February 16, 2021

Nowadays, in the world of connecting learning, the impact of

social media on education is becoming a driver factor. The world

is becoming smaller, and by the use of technology such as social

media, the way we get an education is changing. Social media and

education can compliment one another if use effectively. Social

media has many positive effects on education. Social media is

continually developing new educational possibilities for

students.

Gorhe Manasi-2019

According to Gorhe there are many positive effects

associated with the social media use amongst students related to

their academics. Students can connect with various educational

groups related to their field of study on social media and easily

access all the important and authentic information shared by

others. They can also share some good information they found out

on such groups, which in turn will boost their confidence and

this will help in the learning process.

Ability to form groups on social media enable professors to

connect with the students to share important instructions for the

13

class as well as necessary study material for the students.

Students can also share their viewpoints, innovative ideas or

even doubts related to studies with their classmates and

professors on these groups. This will help students to actively

participate in such group discussion and this in turn will help

to improve their knowledge. Professors can also provide a link

for students to upload their homework or assignments on such

study group. All of this will have a lot of time and effort of

the students to collaborate, if they are working together on some

group project. This helps them to communicate and exchange

information for the project easily, thus saving their energy and

commute time that can be utilized for the project work.

Students used social media platform such as youTube, which

have millions of educational videos, which help students to

broaden their scope of knowledge as well as develop various other

good skills and talents. If students find some good and

informative videos related to their studies, they can share it

with their friends or classmates who can benefit by watching

them.

There are many students who do not actively take part in

class or group project discussions. Some of them do not prefer

even face to face communication with their classmates. Such

14

students find it easy and comfortable to take part in online

study discussions on social media.

Presently, there are many academic counselors on social

media who can help students to solve their academic problems.

Students also have exposure to contact experts or refer to their

blogs in various fields of using social media to gain proper

information and knowledge for their own field of study. This can

help them to gain some real-world and actual knowledge which will

increase their knowledge scope. Students can read various

educational blogs which can help to improve their knowledge and

thus help their studies.

Deng and Tavarez (2013)

Social media help students to think clearly and this

helps them to make wise decisions in their day-to-day lives. As

per the study conducted by Apeanti and Danso (2014), Students

felts that their grades would be better if they contact

professors openly through social media to get their doubts

clarified. Yunus and Salehi (2012) pointed out, that social media

use enhanced student’s vocabulary and writing ability.

Thus, it is clear that if wed wisely for educational and

constructive purposes, social media have positive influence on

student’s academic performance. Despite the various positive

15

effects that social media can have, if not used properly and

vigilantly it can also affect students academic performance

negatively.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Almost everyday, a new social media platforms is introduced

to the world, specifically, these social media are mostly used by

the students to aid them I their scholastic purposes usage home.

17

Based from recency theory or miller and Campbell(2009), our

mind retains information that is recently gathered from certain

events and observations in our surroundings. The Recency Effect

Theory also started that given a lists of things to memorize on

certain amount of time, we will have a propensity to recall

easily the things that are located on the last part of the list

as compared to those in the middle.

On the online website of Curtin University’s Student

Transition and Retention Team, the makers of the Retention

Theory, they pointed out that there are about ten variables that

comprises the students ability to retain information, this

included: individual attributes, students finances, developing

relationships with the prospective students, addressing the

impact of pre-university education, goal commitment,

institutional commitment, quality of teaching and learning, peer-

group interaction, faculty interactions, and the graduates with

the U.

2. The Positive Effects/Impacts of Social Media to the students.

MOTIVATE ONLINE LEARNING. With the use of social media platforms

in school, the students gets motivated and fostered to learn.

Educational videos on YouTube, easy access to e-books, online

notes, and learning via video calls are major aspects that

contribute to educational development. Distance learning is one

18

of the best ways to learn from reputed organizations by being at

any location what social media has made possible.

IMPROVE CREATIVE ELEMENT. Social media helps boost creative

skills in students by permitting them to learn and later execute

the same by doing it themselves. Quite frequently, a student’s

hidden talent is revealed when he/she starts to take pictures and

use online editing skills to make it took aesthetically

appealing. Plenty of students have interesting hobbies that they

post online via videos and photographer’s, which helps them

realize their potential for making it a career.

BOOST ACADEMIC PRFORMANCE. Another vital impact of social media

is boosting academic performance and increasing their knowledge

through data and information gathering. When students are

assigned projects in schools, they go through several online

platforms to collect information so as to find solutions to their

assignments.
