INTRODUCTION TO

QUANTITY SURVEYING
ENGR. JYZEL CRIS B. FACTOR
DEFINITION

Quantity Surveying largely

deals with managing and
controlling various aspects of
construction. It gives an
understanding of the technical
elements of construction over
the life cycle of a facility or
building, a necessary project
controls tool to achieve the value
and best quality within the
client’s specifications.

MAPUA UNIVERSITY – School of Civil, Environmental and Geological Engineering

PURPOSE
• covers a considerable number of
construction activities such as
tendering, value management, change
control, cost estimation, and claims
management.

• It supports the design process by

implementing systematic cost criteria
focused on maintaining a reasonable
relationship among cost, utility, and
quality which thus helps managers
achieve the clients requirements within
the agreed budget and time.

QUANTITY SURVEYOR

• is responsible for the

financial, contractual, and
commercial management of a
construction project both
before and during the
construction process.

• is to provide accurate and

timely cost advice throughout
both the planning and
construction phases of a
building project

Quantity Surveyors: SMM

• SMM: Standard method of

measurement
• Standardized reference for all
measurement works
• Provide solutions and improve
communications within
industry

PRE- POST
CONSTRUCTION
CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION

 Feasibility studies of a project  Monitoring of the project’s  Prepare statement of final account
 Roughly estimate what is involved progress (records actual cost for all
in the project  Contract Documentation sections)
 Budgetary Cost Control  Interim Payment  Assessment of Building
 Identify cost and overall budget  Evaluation of Variations Replacement Values for Insurance
(Value Engineering)  Represent the Employer/Client in
Design and Build Contract
