I. OBJECTIVES
The Learners demonstrate an understanding of:
A. Content Standard How changes in the environment may affect species extinction.

The Learners shall be able to:

B. Performance Standard Make a multimedia presentation of a timeline of extinction of representative
microorganisms, plants, and animals.
The Learners should be able to…
C. Learning Competencies Relate species extinction to the failure of populations of organisms to adapt
(w/ LC code) to abrupt changes in the environment. (S9LT-Ie-f30)

At the end of the session, learners should be able to:

1. Explain index of diversity;
2. Differentiate high from low index of diversity;
D. Specific Objectives 3. Calculate index of diversity; and
4. Appreciate the importance of a balanced environment in the survival of the
organisms.

Mathematics – calculating Index of Diversity

Activity: A Ticket to Ride

C. Establishing a purpose for the Mechanics: 1. Take a trip to your designated destination based on the given ticket.
lesson 2. Answer the guide questions given.
(ENGAGE) 3. Finish the task in 3 minutes.

2. What organisms did you see 2. Which species dominates
from your trip? the area?
3. How many different kinds of
organisms did you see?

In Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, there are many populations. You can see a
hundreds of different species of organisms, whereas in a Coconut
Plantation, you can only see one species dominating in the area.

Why do you think population sizes vary among organisms? Let’s work on the
next activity to find out the amount of biodiversity and species distribution in a
community.

Lesson Proper Activity: Index of Diversity

Mechanics: 1. Complete the data table.
D. Discussing new concepts and 2. Calculate the index of diversity using the given formula.
practicing new skills 3. Answer the guide questions.
(EXPLORE)
3. Finish the task in 10 minutes.

Students will be divided into eight (8) groups according to their respective
barangays. Each group will be given a designated area and materials for their
field study.

Formula for Index of Diversity:

𝑁. 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑁. 𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑠

𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑡 =
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 Individuals
Guide Questions:
1. Compare how your tree I.D. would be different in a vacant lot than in a
grass lawn. Explain your answer.
2. If humans were concerned about biological diversity, would it be best to
have a low or high I.D. for a particular environment? Explain your answer.

See activity sheet attachment.

HOTS Questions:
concepts and skills in daily living
(ELABORATE) 1. What is population?
2. What is biodiversity?
3. What is index of diversity?
4. When can we say that a community has a high index of
diversity? Low index of diversity?
5. Is a balanced environment important in the survival of
organisms? Why?

The major components of Earth’s Biodiversity

 Functional Diversity - biological and chemical processes such
as energy flow and matter recycling needed for survival of
species, communities, and ecosystems.
 Genetic Diversity – variety of genetic material within a species
population
 Ecological Diversity – variety of terrestrial and aquatic
ecosystems found in an area or on the earth
 Species Diversity – the number and abundance of species
present in different communities.

G. Evaluating learning
(EVALUATE) Multiple Choice
Directions: Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
