Leadership:

Leadership is defined as the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a
common goal. In the sense of business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues
with a strategy to meet the company's needs.

According to Dwight D. Eisenhower, “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do

something you want done because he wants to do it.”

According to Peter F. Drucker, “Leadership is not magnetic personality, that can just as well be
a glib tongue. It is not “making friends and influencing people”, that is flattery. Leadership is
lifting a person’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher
standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.”

Evaluation of Sated Statements Drawing on Leadership Theories:

There are so many types of leadership theories. They are as follows:

1. "Great Man" Theories

2. Trait Theories

3. Contingency Theories

4. Situational Theories

5. Participative Theories

6. Management Theories

Great Man" Theories: According to this leadership theory, great leaders are simply born with the
necessary internal characteristics such as charisma, confidence, intelligence, and social skills that
make them natural-born leaders.

Trait Theories: Trait theory assumes that people inherit certain qualities and traits that
make them better suited to leadership. By this theory, particular personality or behavioral
characteristics shared by leaders. For example, traits like extroversion, self-confidence, and
courage are all traits that could potentially be linked to great leaders.

Contingency Theories: This theory focuses on particular variables related to the environment that
might determine which particular style of leadership is best suited for the situation. It is assumed
in this theory that no leadership style is best in all situations.

Situational Theories: In case of situational theories, it is told that leaders choose the best course
of action based upon situational variables. Different styles of leadership may be more appropriate
for certain types of decision-making.

Participative Theories: Participative leadership theories suggest that the ideal leadership style is
one which takes the input of others into account that means a leader recognizes the contribution
of the followers. These leaders encourage participation and contributions from team members
and help them to feel more relevant and committed to the decision-making process. In
participative theories, however, the leader retains the right to allow the input of others.

Now it is the to evaluate the statements made by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook and Mark
Cuban,CEO of Dallas Mavericks. Both of them are successful leader in the business world. If we
look into the statements, it is seen that both of them believes that the contribution of the
followers are important to achieve the organizational goal. Every employee is important for the
organization. In the second statement, made by Mark Cuban, he thinks that floor cleaner is also
important for the organization. Nobody is value less to the organization. By these two
statements, it can be said that both of them believe in Participative Leadership Theories.
Because, we know that according to the participative leadership theory, the leader always
believes that the input from every members of team is crucial to reach the organizational goal.
By helping one another, it is easier to attain the goal. In this leadership theory, the leader thinks
that all the input from group members are relevance. By the participation of both leader and
followers, it can be created a good organizational culture which is seen both in Facebook and
Dallas Mavericks.
