INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The world experiences the tragic event in the history of

mankind, COVID-19 virus. This created chaos in the lives, health,

and economy of the people worldwide. COVID-19 has a significant

impact on human lives. In the Philippines, loss of income and job

opportunities were major concerns. The Philippines is one of only

five countries in the world that has not fully implement in-

person classes since the outbreak, denying the Filipino students

their right to education.

Since new variants are increasing infection rates, the

Philippines has shifted away from the classroom education and

toward online learning platforms. The government has supported

mobile learning as an effective way for students to continue

their education. Schools in the Philippines, have adapted the

different strategies in transferring of knowledge to the

students.

Online learning is an internet-based learning environment

that brings together students from various backgrounds and

perspectives. Students learn in a fully virtual environment when

they participate in online learning. Online learning (also known

as e-learning) was first introduced in the 1990s with the

creation of the internet and was used in distance learning. The

students learn at their own pace and connect to other students

and their teachers all over the world.

Many online courses, especially those for K-12 students,

follow a format that is very similar to in-person classes. The

teacher gives virtual discussions among students, assigns

homework, and monitors the students' progress. These courses can

be synchronous (teachers and students all meet at the same time)

or asynchronous (teachers and students meet at different times)

(non-concurrent). In both cases, the teacher is expected to allow

interaction of students freely.

STI has strengthened its modern approach to teaching known

as blended learning as part of its promise to produce competent

individuals in various fields amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students can access educational materials whenever and wherever

they want. The MAWD combines online learning via the eLearning

Management System (eLMS), a home with hands-on training in

industry-grade laboratories and classroom discussions on campus.

It is appropriate in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic because

it ensures that students can continue their education at home.

This study aims to determine the effects of online learning

to the study habits of the MAWD 11 at STI Naga College this

school year 2021-2022.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies

resulting from in-depth investigation about the study habits of

MAWD 11 students on online learning. The literature and studies

in this chapter cover a wide range of ideas, conceptions,

generalizations, and findings, as well as the evolution of the

study from its beginning to the present. Furthermore, the

information in this chapter assists in familiarizing relevant and

related elements to the current study.

REVIEW OF LITERATED LITERATURE

According to the study of Shivangi Dhawan (2020) entitled

Online Learning: A Panacea in the Time of COVID-19 Crisis. Many

academic units started blended learning, but still a lot of them

are stuck with old procedures. The sudden outbreak of a deadly

disease called Covid-19 caused by a Corona Virus shocked the

entire world. The World Health Organization declared it as

pandemic. This circumstance put pressure on education systems

around the world, forcing instructors to switch to an online

approach of teaching. Many schools and colleges were forced to

close temporarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Several places

are affected globally, and there is concern that the current

semester, as well as future semesters, may be lost. In-person

instruction has been phased out at some institutions, colleges,

and universities. According to the researchers, it seems

unlikely that normal teaching will resume very soon. As social

distancing is so prevalent at this point, learning opportunities

will decrease. These circumstances make scenario planning an

urgent need for academic institutions (Rieley, 2020). E-learning

is linked to a number of arguments. Some of the grounds for

online pedagogy include accessibility, affordability,

flexibility, learning pedagogy, life-long learning, and policy.

It is said that online learning is simple to use and can even

reach rural and isolated locations. In terms of transportation,

lodging, and the overall expense of institution-based learning,

it is considered to be a significantly less expensive way of

education. Another appealing feature of online learning is the

ability to arrange or plan one's time for completing courses

offered online. Rapid developments in technology have made

distance education easy (McBrien et al., 2009). Most of the terms

(online learning, open learning, web-based learning, computer-

mediated learning, blended learning, m-learning, for example have

in common the ability to use a computer connected to a network,

that offers the possibility to learn from anywhere, anytime, in

any rhythm. (Cojocariu et al., 2014). In these environments,

students can be anywhere (independent) to learn and interact with

instructors and other students according to Singh V. & Thurman A.

(2019).

Based on study, comfort and accessibility were some of the

benefits of online learning, while inefficiency and difficulty

maintaining academic integrity were some of the disadvantages

(Mukhtar et al.,2020). The study concluded that the faculty

should be trained in using online modalities and developing

lesson plans with less cognitive load and more interactivity,

according to the recommendations.

Based on the study of Khanam et al.,(2017), time management

is one of the skills that has an impact on the academic study of

time management and the academic achievement of the respondents.

According to the findings, those who scored a high percentage

also had a high mean score on general time management. As a

result, time management is essential for improving academic

performance.

This study recognizes that students must know the importance

of studying habits and needs to be improved. This would benefit

senior high school students because they will be in college

within a few years. Students must develop and improve their study
habits in general. It may inspire them to be better and more

excellent in class.

Study habits play an important role in the development of

knowledge and perception. Study habits reveal how much a person

will learn, how far he wants to go, and how much finances he

wants to make. All of this can be determined throughout one's

life by one's study habits. As a result, it is assumed that study

habits are linked to scholastic or academic success. The

relationship between study habits and student academic

performance are related to each other. (Rabia et al.,2017).

Students appeared to perform poorly in terms of tests in

online class than in-person school. Online school also made it a

lot easier for students to cheat during tests. This makes

students unprepared for in-person school, where they cannot cheat

and look at notes while taking tests (Julia, 2020).

REVIEW OF STUDIES

Allo, M.D. (2020) theorized that online learning is

extremely beneficial during a pandemic. This study not only found

that online learning is beneficial in the face of the COVID-19

pandemic, but also shed light on the internet access, financial

issues and the implementation of online learning. Because of the

learners' financial situation, they hope that lecturers will use

resources like the free Messenger application in the Online

Learning System. They stated that individual tasks are better to

keep the distance physically due to pandemic, but that group

tasks are needed to help friends who do not have an internet

pulse and access. They hope that material and assignments will be

preceded by explanation during implementation. As a result, they

advised that Voice Note be used effectively when giving

instructions. It implied that the lecturer's online learning

material and instruction were difficult to understand.

According to the study conducted by (Steven et al.,2020),

online learning is a subset of machine learning techniques in

which a learner attempts to solve a predictive (or any other type

of decision-making) problem by learning from a series of data

instances one by one. Given the knowledge of correct answers to

previous prediction/learning tasks and possibly additional

information, the goal of online learning is to maximize the

accuracy for the sequence of decisions made by the online

learner. Traditional batch or offline machine learning methods,

on the other hand, are often designed to learn a model from the

entire training data set all at once.

In a study conducted by (Mukhtar et al., 2020), they

discovered that remote learning, comfort, and accessibility were

among the benefits, while inefficiency and difficulty maintaining

academic integrity were among the drawbacks. Faculty should be

trained in using online modalities and developing lesson plans

with less cognitive load and more interactivity, according to the

recommendations.

Furthermore, according to Phatthanan, H. (2019) online

learning programs are becoming an increasingly important part of

higher education learning and training. However, learning online

without close supervision had a very low success rate. Low cost,

flexible time, and a large audience were among the benefits;

however, the disadvantages included a low success rate, easy

distractions, and no class interaction.

The study of Adnan, M., and Anwar, K. (2020) examines the

attitudes of Pakistani higher education students toward mandatory

digital and distance learning university courses amid Coronavirus

(COVID-19). Undergraduate and postgraduate students were polled

about their views on online education in Pakistan. The findings

revealed that in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan, where

the vast majority of students are unable to access the internet

due to technical and financial issues, online learning cannot

produce desired results. Other issues raised by higher education

students included a lack of face-to-face interaction with the

instructor, response time, and the absence of traditional

classroom socialization.
