NATIONAL
ARTIST OF
THE
NATIONAL ARTIST AWARD
 Highest form of recognition to Filipino artists for
their significant contributions in the arts and
letter.
 The award is conferred every three years
through a rigorous deliberation and selection
process jointly facilitated by two major cultural
offices, “NATIONAL COMMISSION ON CULTURE
and ARTS AND THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE
PHILIPPINES.”
 Was established in 1972 under President Decree
National Commission for Culture and the
Arts (NCCA)
Philippines
 is the overall policy making body, coordinating,
and grants giving agency for the preservation,
development and promotion of Philippine arts and culture
NCCA is an executing agency for the policies
Its task is to administer the National Endowment Fund for

Culture and the Arts (NEFCA) — fund exclusively for the
implementation of culture and arts programs and projects.

Cultural Center of the
Philippines,
 also known as CCP Complex, is a
government owned and controlled
corporation established to provide a home
for the preservation, promotion and
development of Philippine art and culture.
 The CCP was established through Executive
Order No. 30’s 1969 by President Ferdinand
Marcos.
 It receives an annual subsidy and is placed under
the National Commission for Culture and the Arts
for purposes of policy coordination.

Guillermo Estrella Tolentino

Was born in Malolos, Bulacan on 24 July
1890.
 Guillermo or Memong, as his family called
him, inherited this artistic skill.
 Moreover, Memong became one of the
three best guitar players in the Philippines
during his time.
OBLATION
Depicting a male nude with arms
outreached as a gesture of sacrifice and
freedom.

 An ethnomusicologist.
 National Artists for Music( awarded 1997)
 Maceda’s Pagsamba involved mixed voices,
indigenous musical instrument such as bamboo
buzzer, clappers, and whistle flutes; while

 He donated his precious collections of sound in UP

Center for Ethnomusicology.
 Received recognition From UNESCO Memory of the
world.
ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO
 Bornin the island of Jolo, and proceded to Manila where
he earned a degree in fine arts from the University of
the Philippines(UP) in 1959.
 Imao’s calligraphic work done in the 80’s at the

sculpture garden of Vargas Museum it is an untitled
sculpture which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Allah’
 Configuration
one of the largest public sculptures he
made. Awarded as the 1st Muslim National Artist in 2006

JOSE TANIG JOYA JR.
Graduated from the UP School of fine Arts
in 1953, and became immediately part of
the Neo-realist movement of the period.
 Were selected to represent the

Philippines at the prestigious Venice Art
Biennale one of the oldest international
art exhibitions world wide.

Napoleon Isabelo ‘Billy’
Veloso Abueva
Was born in 1930 studied at the U.P School of
fine arts.
Known as “Godfather of Philippine modern
sculpture.”
He was proclaimed National Artist for Sculpture
in 1976.
Spirit of business drawn from science fiction,
composed of a metal disk with sharp-looking
poles jutting through it.
SPIRIT OF BUSINESS
Church of the Holy in UP-DILIMAN
Credited as the first Catholic church in
the country to employ a circular
architecture with a thin shell dome.
On January 12, 2005 the church is

recognized as a National Historical
Landmark as well as a cultural
treasure. It consolidates the work of
five National Artist.

The first round chapel in the
Philippines with the altar in
the middle and the first to
have a thin shell concrete
dome and can accommodate
1000 people .
Hanging above the circular altar positioned at
the center is a double-side crucifix carved in
hardwood.
One side of the crucifix depicts Christ crucified,

while an image of the Ressurected Christ is on
the other vantage point.

Alice Reyes
 Founder of ballet Philippines,
choreographed the performance.

 NAA for theater.
 He took charge of the costume and set design.

 A popular comic-book illustrator/writer and regarded
as one of the pillars of the Philippine komiks industry,
Coching was a contemporary of National Artists .
Gerardo de Leon
NAA for film
He animated the comics story of
Pedro Penduko into film.
Nick Joaquin
NAA for Literature.
Wrote A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino,
1950.
 A Portrait of the Artist as
Filipino is a literary play written in
English.
 The play forwards concerns about
the value of art, plight of an artists
and the nostalgia for “peace” and
“glory” days in Manila.
Lamberto Avellana
 NAA for film
 Adapted A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino into film
 His
wife and collaborator , the actress, director
and writer DAISY HONTIVEROS
AVELLANA( NAA for Theater) played the lead
character in both film and theatre.
