Let’s Try
Directions: Read each question carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer on the space
provided before the number.

A. It is a word that has a specific meaning within a specific field of expertise.
B. It refers to the steps taken by a researcher to produce certain experimental
conditions.
C. It is a statement that describes how a particular variable is to be measured, or
how an object or condition is to be recognized.
D. It describes or explains a technical terminology. It is used to introduce the
vocabulary which makes communication in a particular field succinct and
unambiguous.

Let’s Explore and Discover
Have you experienced reading a text with words familiar to you and yet you failed to
understand the idea or the point of the writer? Some people experienced the same especially
those reading academic texts or research papers. The key to understanding is your knowledge
about the different meanings of words as used in different contexts. This lesson will help
you understand the technical and operational definition of words. So, get ready and explore
the power of words!

Unlocking of Two uses of definitions:

Difficulties ✓ Definitions clarify a description of a new development or
a new technology in a technical field. For instance, a
zoologist who has discovered a new animal species
A technical definition names and defines it.
is used to introduce the ✓ Definitions help specialists communicate with less-
vocabulary which knowledgeable readers. A manual explaining how to
makes communication tune up a car includes definitions of parts and tools.
in a particular field
succinct and
unambiguous.

An operational
definition assigns
meaning to concept or
to a variable by
specifying the activities
or “operations”
necessary to measure it
and evaluate the
measurement.

An essential component of an operational definition is measurement. When a word is

to be used scientifically or technically, its precise meaning must be conveyed—it must be
clear and unambiguous. Clarity of meaning is achieved by operationally defining the term.
An operational definition, then, makes the concept observable by stating what the scientist
does to measure it.
In technical definition, a technical term or word is defined. Technical words have
specific meanings in each area of study.

3
There are different types of technical definition but for this lesson, consider this
format: Term is classification plus differentiation.
Definition: A stall is a flight condition in which the lift produced becomes less than the
Term Classification Differentiation
weight of the airplane, and the airplane stops flying.
If the word stall has multiple definitions in many contexts, the format is:
(Qualifier+) Term = Classification + Differentiation.

Notice how the term “stall” has three totally different meanings depending on the context.

Qualifier Term Classification Differentiation

is an operating in which a sudden and unexpected
CAR (In driving), a stall
condition loss of power occurs.
AIRPLANE (In in which the lift produced is less
a stall is a flight condition
flying), than the weight of the airplane.
is a simple three- that is designed to shelter an
COW (In farming), a stall
sided compartment animal in a barn or stable.

How about an operational definition? An operational definition is a statement that

describes how a particular variable is to be measured, or how an object or condition is to be
recognized. Operational definitions tell you what to do or what to observe.
Example 1: Lemon juice, vinegar, and certain other substances are acids. To find out
whether a substance is an acid, place a drop of the substance on blue litmus paper.
Operational definition: Substances that cause the litmus paper to turn pink are
acids.

Two Types of Operational Definition

Measured Operational Definition Experimental Operational Definition

Operations by which investigators Steps taken by a researcher to produce
may measure a concept. certain experimental conditions.
Example: An actual (score) value Example: A manipulated scenario to
from a test or questionnaire the produce the condition of “hunger.” (such as
researchers would develop to preventing the subject from consuming
measure “hunger.” anything for x number of hours)

Elements of an Operational Definition

According to Dr. Deming, an operational definition has three elements that help you to
apply it:
1. Criteria: The standard against which to evaluate the results of the test.
2. Test: A specific procedure for measuring a characteristic.
3. Decision: The determination as to whether the test results show that the characteristic
meets the criteria.
