IMPACTS ON THE USAGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN THE PHILIPPINES

SOCIAL MEDIA OVERVIEW

According to Kaplan and Haenlein(2010), social media is “a group of internet-based applications
that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and
exchange of user-generated content” (p.61). McCay-Peet and Quan-Haase (2017), also offered a definition
that social media are “web-based services that allows individuals, communities, and organizations to
collaborate, connect, interact, and build community by enabling them to create, modifies, share, and engage
with user-generated content that is easily accessible” (p. 17).
Here in the Philippines, the commonly used social media platforms are Facebook, Messenger,
Instagram, Twitter, Google, Youtube, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok , etc. The use these platforms has become
so extensive in the Philippines that the country has been tagged as “The Social Media Capital of the World”,
and has also become part of the Filipino Internet culture, according to Silver (2004), which describes the
many manifestation of the use of computer networks for communication, entertainment, business and
recreation.
IMPACTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA
The following are the positive impacts of social media in a certain aspect of the country:

Politics. Filipinos use these online venues to voice their political issues and demand action from
their elected officials. In the Philippines social media can help politician to be known and promote their
campaign, as well as help the public know the candidate they voted for.

Job Hiring. Job recruitment has been considerably influenced by social media. Recruiters often
use online networks to advertise job openings and find their ideal prospects. It has also made it easier for
job seekers to find job openings. This is visible on platforms such as LinkedIn, where job searchers can
establish a profile that includes their talents and view what job openings recruiters are promoting.

Socialisation. The way individuals socialize has changed dramatically because to sites like
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It has made it simple to communicate with our family, friends, and
relatives in real time, especially in contacting OFW relatives. People can use social media to share photos
and videos, as well as connect with their friends and family. This has deepened ties and brought families
together in ways that were before impossible. People also have the opportunity to make and meet new
acquaintances.

Education. With the use of social media platforms in school and currently, at home, the students
get motivated and fostered to learn. Educational videos on Youtube, E-books, PDFs and learning via video
or conference calls are major aspect that contribute to educational development in the country.

Business industry. “Social Media is the new media”. Social media has had a significant impact on
businesses, especially on promotion. Social media applications served as an avenue to disseminate the information faster
especially for the tourism establishments with lesser cost (Buted et al, 2014). Businesses may advertise
their goods in real time and attract more clients via internet platforms at a lower cost.

Culture and belief. Filipinos are known for their deep familial ties and for being hospitable. Over
millions of Filipinos are living and working abroad, through social media, specifically Facebook
Messenger, helped bridge the gap among the families. Also, social media paves a way for Philippine Culture
to be recognized and remembered internationally by promoting cultural arts through uploading photos and
videos in the internet.

Consequently, social media has certain negative consequences. Despite the fact that it is a platform
through which we socialize, acquire information, conduct business, and understand political issues, there
are some drawbacks to consider:

- Cyberbullying. Here in the Philippines, cybercrime laws are not that enforceable to some point. Hence,
any Netizen can bully and can get out of it; be bullied and not protected.

- Privacy risk. Impersonation, theft, and stalking, among other vices, are all possible consequences of
sharing personal information.

- Health Issues. Most Filipinos when in front of the computer tends to forgot everything – the time, the
people around, to eat, to exercise and to rest. Which could result to illnesses in the long run such obesity,
depression, heart problems, etc.

Online addiction. This addiction can result in a loss of family bonding, sleep deprivation and lack of
healthy foods to consume. Also, causes distraction and reduces learning capabilities to studies.

Since information spreads more swiftly online, a piece of incorrect information might quickly reach
a large number of individuals and generate widespread panic. People tend to compare the virtual world to
reality. Overly dependent to the virtual world rather than the real world. The impact of technology is not
all positive; there are numerous issues that can lead to a teenager's bad consequences as an individual. There
have been increased crimes or sexual abuse using social media. That is the disadvantage of social media
modernisation.
CONCLUSION
Our daily lives have become increasingly dependent on social media. Social media has a variety of
good cultural effects. People's connections were strengthened through social media, which provided a
platform for them to exchange their thoughts, photos, and other information. Interacting with other
individuals and exchanging new ideas and thoughts on social media boosted our society's creativity and
social consciousness. It is also vital for every business because social media will be used in your business
at some time. International business and marketing have grown thanks to social media. People prefer to
make purchases over the internet. Social media has, on the other hand, had a bad impact on our culture.
People have the freedom to post whatever they want on social media, and some of those posts may contain
offensive images. People are becoming increasingly cautious of one another's viewpoints. People began
debating each other's political, religious, social, and cultural perspectives. Youth have been negatively
affected by social media. Physical activity was reduced as a result. People would rather chat and sit in front
of computers all day. Social media has also had a harmful impact on youth. Some sites with unsuitable
information may have an impact on children and manipulate them. The negative aspect of social media is
that people post a lot of irrelevant information, and bullying and harassment on social media has increased.
People are capable of making harsh and unpleasant remarks about everything and everyone. Our culture is
influenced by social media in positive, negative, and unpleasant ways
