☐
Leveling is a process of determining the height of one level relative to another, it is used to
used in surveying to establish the elevation of point relate to datum, or to establish a point at
given elevation to relative datum.

• Rise and fall method : Set up and test instrument for operational effectiveness and
accuracy.
• Take and record readings from the datum and at nominated or selected stations following
project specifications.
• Identify back sights, intermediate sights and foresights, and book levels.
• Transfer instrument to another location, repeat process, and record change station and record
readings.
• Calculate reduced levels for all stations using rise and fall method, and check accuracy of
recordings using the three-check method
Q6: Explain the key functions of the following types of constructions Satisfactory
drawings: response
Yes ☐ No ☐
Site Plan
Floor Plan
Structural drawings
Site plan – A site plan is a type of drawing used by architects, landscape architects.
Floor plan - it is a technical drawing to scale, showing a view from above, of the relationships
between rooms, spaces, traffic patterns.
Cross sectional plan - are architectural drawings that are orthographic projections of structure with
cut of transecting them
Elevation plan - it is an orthographic projection drawing that shows one side of the house. The
purpose of elevation plan is to show finished appearance of given side of the house and furnish
vertical height dimensions.
Structural drawings – the structural drawing show the foundation, floor and roof of the building,
these plans provide information like size and location of the structural element present in
respective plans.
Q7: Answer the following: Satisfactory
7.1. Define ‘Title Panel’ of a construction drawing? How do you check a response
Title Panel for its latest amendment? Give your answer in 50-100 Yes ☐ No ☐
words.
7.1 Title panel - it is drawing usually located on the bottom or lower right hand corner, contain
all information necessary to identify the drawing and t0o verify its validity.
7.2 amendment mean there may be changes to fundamental entitlements and obligations of a
contract, the changes may mean adding or altering the values of the contract in the entry
component of the agreement
Q8: Explain the following construction symbols and terminology relevant to Satisfactory
levelling procedures: response
Yes ☐ No ☐
a. Contour lines
b. Datum
c. Reduced level (RL)
A, contour lines - A contour lines is a line drawn on a topographic map to indicate ground elevation
or depression.
B Datum - a datum level is an arbitrary horizontal plane of reference from which all vertical
dimensions are measured on a construction project. It may display the vertical height difference
between different parts of the site.
C. reduced level - it refers to equating elevations of survey points with reference to a commonly
assumed datum, it is vertical distance above or below datum plane, a reduced level is the position
of point as it relates to site datum.
Q9: Explain the processes for interpreting engineering drawings and sketches Satisfactory
for carrying out levelling operations for the following in 150-200 words: response
Yes No ☐
☐
a) Title blocks
b) Lines
a) Title blocks are a template for a sheet and generally includes border for the page and
information about the design firm, such as name, address, and logo. The title block can
also display information about project client and individual sheet, including issues date and
revise information.
b) Construction line works are temporary line work entities that can be used as references
when creating and positioning other line work.
Q10: What are the quality requirements related to carrying out levelling Satisfactory
operations? Write your answer in 20-30 words response
Yes ☐ No ☐
Australian standards
Internal company quality policy and standards
Manufacturer specified
Workplace operations and procedure
a. Isolation procedure: an isolation procedure is set of steps to be followed to keep plant and
its component from being set in motion or to prevent the released of stored energy.
a) Differential levelling
b) Trigonometric levelling
b) datum Yes ☐ No ☐
c) backsight
d) foresight
e) intermediate sight
f) plumb
Negative readings – a negative reading may occur when the sensor is exposed , that produces
negative cross interference.
Datum – a model of earth that is used in mapping, datum consist a series of numbers that
defined shape and size of ellipsoid and orientation.
Backsight – a reading of the leveling rod in its unchanged position when the leveling instrument has
been taken to new position.
Intermediate site - it is any staff reading taken on the point of unknown elevation after the back
sight and before sight.
Plumb - a small weight or mass or weight of lead, or any other heavy material attached to a line
and used by surveyors and engineers to indicate a vertical direction
Q15: Answer the following questions: Satisfactory
response
15.1. When carrying out levelling operations using “Collimation method”,
Yes ☐ No ☐
how will you calculate reduced levels? Write your answer in 50-100
words.
15.2. Explain two (2) methods that can be used for the following levelling
activities in 100-200 words each.
15.1 collimation method- a method of calculating reduced levels by subtracting staff readings from
the level of line of sight of the instrument.
15.2 –
Measuring the height - measuring and recording heights or levels of ceiling and floors levels
Piers details
Concrete leveling
Excavation and Foundation level
Collimation method
Q16: Describe the types of tools and equipment used for carrying out levelling Satisfactory
operations given in column 1 of the table. response
Yes ☐ No ☐
Tool and equipment Description (15-60 words each)
a) A two peg test checks whether your dumpy level is capable of showing a true horizontal reading.
This is vital to ensure your measurements are accurate and reliable.
The two peg test tells you the measurement that your level is out over the distance you test over. If
the two peg test is showing an un acceptable error, then you must withdraw the equipment and get
it serviced by an appropriate comp
b) Place the level on a wall and centre the bubble as accurately as possible
Turn the level for end – end and place back on the line.
Check the bubble, and see if it is exactly in the centre, if not then level out.
Q18: Describe the following with respect to the maintenance of levelling Satisfactory
devices: response
Yes ☐ No ☐
a) Authorised operator servicing and minor replacements
b) Cleaning
c) Monitoring, recording and reporting faults
a) Change the engine oil, replace the oil filter, replace the air filter, check break pads and
replace the spark plug
b) Service annually, calibrate regularly and check against the control points, use the carrying
case and storage, troubleshooting in the field.
c) It is a maintenance concept that increases operational availability and that reduces operating
cost through mechanism.
During monitoring - reduce the error, identify the solution, record the solution, record the
retest, track fault report
19.1
Australian standards help , maintain the safety, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of building
Australia, they outlines, guidelines, and detailed technical specifications, referenced in the
industry regulations, including the national construction code.
19.2 leveling is a process of determining the height of one level to another relative level, it is
used to establishing the elevation of point relative to datum, and establish a point at a given
elevation relative to datum.
Q20: Discuss the processes for setting out construction tasks for levelling Satisfactory
operations in 70-120 words. response
Yes ☐ No ☐
2. Take a reading while holding the staff on the Datum (RL+50 m). Because this is the first staff
reading after the levelling instrument has been set up, it will be a backsight.
3. Take a reading by moving the staff to A. This will be a sight for intermediates.
4. Take a reading by moving the staff to B. This will also be a beginner's sight.
5. Take a reading by moving the staff to C. Another intermediate sight will be seen here.
6. Take a reading while moving the staff to D. This will be a foresight because the level will be
raised following this reading. (To keep the level the same, a change plate should be placed on
the ground.)
7. Measure the distance between the stations and record it in the field book (see Table 1).
8. Set the level to position two on the change plate and the staff to position D. Take a reading
by turning the staff so that it faces the level. This is going to be a backsight.
9. Change the staff to the E position and take a reading. This will be a sight for intermediates.
10. Change the staff to the F position and obtain a reading. This will be a foresight because the
level will be raised following this reading.
11. Now, on the change plate, shift the level to Leveling position three and leave the staff at F.
