QUARTER 3, WEEK 7

Science Teacher: ____________________________________________ Date: ___________________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
Climate change is a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define
Earth’s local, regional, and global climates. Some of the key indicators of climate change include increase in
the global land and ocean temperature, rise in the sea levels, loss of ice in the poles and in glaciers, and
occurrence of more frequent and stronger typhoons, heatwaves, floods, and droughts.

II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELCs:

Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on a global level

OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the causes and effects of climate change, investigate the occurrence of El Niño and La
Niña
2. Suggest activities that we can do to mitigate/lessen the effect of climate change.

III. ACTIVITIES:
A1. Activity #1
YOUR TASK: Label the series of pictures that trace how human activities cause a chain of events that, in
the end, goes back to humans. You may choose your answers from the box below. Write the letter only on
the given space. (1 point for every correct answer)
A. Rise in sea levels
B. Flooding, submerging of low-lying areas, and destruction of life and property
C. Rise in average temperature of land and sea
D. Melting of polar ice caps and mountain glaciers

B1. ANALYSIS #1 (1 point for each correct answer)
Answer the following questions:
1. How does burning of fossil fuels and garbage, and deforestation affect the land and sea. Give at least two
answers.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
2. How does the rise in average temperature of land and sea affect living things?
Give at least two answers.

A2. ACTIVITY #2 CLIMATE CHANGE: EL NIŇO

Carefully examine the pictures below. The thick dark arrows in each image represent the movement
of warm water in the Pacific Ocean. Study the part where the arrows are pointing, then color that part of the
Pacific Ocean red to indicate warm water. Then find the part of the Pacific Ocean with cold water and color
it blue.

Figure 2 – Comparison between a normal year and an El Niño year

B2. ANALYSIS #2 (1 point for each correct answer)
1. Based on the picture, which part of the Pacific Ocean has warmer water during a normal year?
___________________Which part has warmer water during an El Niño year? _______________________

2. On a normal year, trade winds or equatorial winds move warm water to the west of the Pacific Ocean.
What causes the warm water to move to the east of the Pacific Ocean during an El Niño year?
_____________________________________________________________________________________

3. Warm ocean temperature is likely to bring rain. Which part of the Pacific Ocean is likely to experience
heavy rains during El Niño? ______________________________________________________________

4. What would be experienced by countries in the west of the Pacific Ocean including the Philippines during
El Niño? _____________________________________________________________________________

5. El Niño and La Niña are exact opposites of each other. If El Niño occurs due to weaker than usual trade
winds, what do you think causes La Niña? __________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________

C. ABSTRACTION (1 point for each correct answer)

1. What causes climate change? Enumerate at least three.

2. What are the effects of climate change? Enumerate at least three.
