Module 12

CLIMATE CHANGE

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

 identify the causes of climate change;
 assess the various impacts of climate change including economic,
geopolitical, biological, meteorological and cultural, etc;
 apply STS concepts to the issue of climate change;
 create a simple climate change advocacy through poster, slogan, and
infomercial

Introduction

The hot topic in the world’s agenda recently is climate change. Climate change
refers to a significant change in global or regional climate patterns, or system in
particular time. Climate change may be due to several natural processes such as
radiation, volcano and other variables in the climate system. It may also due to human
activities like deforestation, changes in atmospheric condition and land use. Some
indications or evidences of climate change comes from different sources such as
glacier is melting away due to gradual increase of earth’s temperature.

Lesson

The difference between weather and climate

WEATHER IS: CLIMATE IS

Short term Long term
Limited area Wide area
Can change rapidly Seasonal changes
Difficult to predict Easy to predict
Measured over long span of time

There are causes of climate change:

1. GLOBAL WARMING is gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s

atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased level of
gases
2. HUMAN ACVITTIES such as deforestation, land use and lack of waste management
3. GREEN HOUSE EFFECT is the problem caused by increased quantities of gases
Greenhouse Gases are essential to our climate.
84

A number of greenhouse gases occur naturally in the Earth’s atmosphere

 Water vapor from water cycle

 Carbon dioxide in the distant past, the Earth was much warmer. High levels of
Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere fueled lush growth, some of which was stored in
the form of fossil fuels. Carbon Dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere has risen by about
30% since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Most of the increase is due to
the combustion of fossil fuels, which releases the long-stored CO2 back into the
atmosphere.
 Methane is released by coal mining, landfills, and by agriculture, particularly through
the digestive processes of beef and milk cows.
 Nitrous oxide is produced by cars, by fossil fuels used for heat and electricity, and
by agriculture.
 Chlorofluorocarbon is nontoxic, nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of
carbon and fluorine. They are used in the manufacturing of aerosol sprays, packing
materials and as refrigerants.

The greenhouse gas content of the atmosphere is being altered by human activity.
The result of this change is global warming.

We got here because of our lifestyle. So our lifestyle has to change. So as

citizens of the world what can we do to help find solution to reduce climate change. First
we must admit that climate change is everyone’s problem. No agency, government, or
scientist can “fix it” for us. We are all in this together.

Here’s what can we do

1. Heating and Cooling 4. Conserve in the Car
2. Conserve Hot Water 5. Reduce waste
3. Conserve in the electricity
