PEOPLE START TO INHABIT THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines' first people are considered to have lived 40,000 years ago. Human
bones dating back to over 22,000 years ago have been discovered on Palawan.
Palawan has also yielded stone tools dating from 30,000 to 40,000 years ago (See
Tabon Man Below). The qualities of these tools are similar to those found on
Kalimantan, according to an analysis of them (Indonesian Borneo).

In prehistoric and ancient times, the main peoples of the Philippine archipelago were
the Negritos, proto-Malays, and Malays. The Negritos are thought to have moved
30,000 years ago, during the last glacial period, through land bridges. Later
migrations were by water and occurred over a period of several thousand years, both
before and after the Christian era. Sea levels decreased during the prehistoric Ice
Ages, exposing land bridges between Asia and the islands that are today the
Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Ocean waters covered these land bridges when
sea levels increased, cutting the islands off from the Asian mainland. It's possible that
early settlers on the Philippines arrived by watercraft.

People have inhabited in Australia for at least 60,000 years, and during the Ice Ages,
no land bridges connected Australia to anywhere. Land bridges connected Sumatra,
Java, Bali, and Borneo to Southeast Asia throughout the cold ages. Land bridges did
not connect the Philippines and the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi, Lombok, Flores,
Timor, and the Moluccas to Southeast Asia. New Guinea and Australia were
connected by land bridges, but not with Indonesia or Southeast Asia. Early man was
considered to have been unable to travel past the 15-mile-wide Lombok Straight,
which connects Bali and Lombok. Human-made stone flakes have been discovered in
730,000-year-old deposits on Flores, which have been cited as proof that early man
was able to cross the Lombok Strait.

The Philippines were most likely colonized by individuals who arrived in tiny groups
from Southeast Asia's mainland. The first group is said to be Negritos (See Below).
Malayans arrived in the Philippines about 2300 years ago, bringing with them a highly
complex civilisation, including dairy, iron melting and tool making, pottery methods,
and the sawah system (rice fields). Muslim traders from Kalimantan (Indonesia)
migrated to the Philippines in the tenth century. Mindanao and the other smaller
islands in the southern Philippines have traditionally been the center of Islam in the
Philippines.

ISSUES HOW CAN THE YOUTH ADDRESS

THIS ISSUE?

Discrimination From my perspective, the only thing I can

do is to prevent indigenous people from
being discriminated against is to be a
good role model to my networks,
demonstrating that the importance of their
human rights is valid because we are all
equal.

Homelessness and Malnutrition As a youth, I may assist homeless and

malnourished indigenous people by
providing or donating food, clothing, and
sleeping items such as pillows and
blankets. Even tiny things are a huge aid
and step in the right decision for them to
be able to live.

Illiteracy As a youth, I can initiate activities or

programs that demonstrate the situation
they are in while also earning a profit
through various sectors of society,
government departments, or
non-governmental organizations that can
see that specific activity through the use
of social media, and the money raised will
be used to support indigenous people’s
education.
