Depression in the teenage
Mood fluctuation is a very normal part of our daily life. Everyone experiences highs and lows
in their lives but when changes in mood becomes long lasting that starts effecting the normal
day functioning of their lives like keeping a relationship, sticking to a normal life task or not
being able to focus on your job in such cases experts suggest that a person is suffering from
some sort of personality disorder or psychological disorder.

It is estimated that 10 percent of the people at some point of their lives can suffer from
depression. Depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by various symptoms like
feeling sad, distressed, unmotivated, excessively tired or loosing interest in pleasurable things
this can happen because of various reasons like maybe because of a bad relationship, a
trauma, an accident, being bullied, living in poverty or loosing someone very close to you but
the exact cause of depression still remain unknown. Genetics play an important role in
depression. Many people who suffer from depression also experiences anxiety. Depressed
people are more susceptible to stress that can cause physical changes in the brain. Studies
have revealed that brain circuit that normally regulates moods is deregulated in case of
depression. In case of depression brain starts responding excessively to the negative events
that results in effecting the emotional and behavioral responses of a human.

Depression in teenagers has become a real time issue in today's world. Teenagers have a
relatively high risk of facing this problem even if they have suffered some trauma or accident
in their early childhood or childhood; they are more likely to be affected by it the most when
they reach teenage as the hormones at are the peaks which make them feel everything at
most. If those childhood traumas and aftereffects of incidents are not addressed at that time,
they start growing with that individual. All the reasons mentioned above can lead to
depression in teenagers. Depression id unable to be diagnosed in childhood as at that age the
victim doesn't have any idea of what feeling he is going through and us unable to recognize it
but as the sense starts to build the person identifies the problems and start taking stress and
worries attached to it leading to severe depression when left unattended. This can be
prevented or cured be timely taking in account the actual problem and discussing it with
someone trustworthy. Parents can prevent their teenagers from this issue by having a constant
quality communication with their kids so that they get to know what's going on their
children’s life and what they're going through. From this they can identify the problem at the
early stage and can prevent their teenagers or kids from depression.

Stereotypes depicts that depressed people are weak but it can be very hard to understand
depression because its invisible. It is defined by thoughts, behavior and feelings. We as
society know very little about depression so much so that if we see someone suffering with it
we just go around and tell them to “snap out of it” “get up and do something” or “keep
yourself busy”. Even the person suffering from this illness doesn’t know how to cope with
such disorder they usually have a very hard time talking about it and them to keep it to
themselves or bottle up their emotions ultimately in severe cases such patients end up taking
their own lives.

To understand what depression really is we must educate our society about the very common
symptoms of depression which involve constant feeling of sadness, anger, guilt or
hopelessness. The symptoms related to behavior might involve social withdrawal, , low
motivation, lack of energy, sleep problems or significant changes in appetite. Symptoms
related to thoughts include poor self esteem, suicidal thoughts and loss of interest in regular
activities these symptoms might last upto a week and they are cyclical meaning they can
come and go over the period of month or years. A person who suffers from depression is
likely to suffer from episodes of it in future also. To us these symptoms appear as decisions it
seems like someone who suffers from it has willfully decided to be lazy, asleep or useless all
day or they have decided to stop hanging around with their friends and peers because they
have a bad attitude but we must remember what’s in our head isn’t imaginary our thoughts,
feelings and behaviors are a complex series of chemicals in our brain.

Treatment for depression mainly includes psychotherapy and medication. Either can work on
its own but a combination of both medication and therapy has been found to be most
effective. In summary depression is a disorder that has a widespread but poorly understood
the symptoms can affect negatively the thoughts, feelings, debating degree and behavior.
However, treatments can help a person overcome this illness or at least elevate the symptoms
of depression. For the most we should keep our eye out for or friends, family, peers or any
such person who might be showing such changes in their mood and help them through this
because at the end of the day we can never know what a person might be feeling or going
through in their personal life the least we can do is help them through such difficult time of
their lives.
