LIFESCI 2A03 Tutorial 3 Reflection

1. Reflect on the efficacy of older versus newer literature cited in an assignment.

Due to the constant advancement of knowledge and discoveries in science, people have
newer scientific literature to serve as the starting basis for their work. It is highly important that
people use newer literature to refer to for their work due to newer literature having more up-to-
date information regarding a particular field in scientific research. Newer literature builds onto
the foundation that older literature already established. People should refer to older literature to
provide them with the background information about the subject of study and they can refer to
how discoveries of older literatures are currently being implemented by present-day researchers.
2. What is the value of review articles?
Review articles are seen of high importance in our society for many reasons. They provide
the reader with a detailed summary of existing research for better understanding. Review articles
provide honest feedback on the quality of the research article. A group of editors check the
research paper in terms of their validity, originality, and their significance. Following this, they
write a paper summarizing the content of the research article in language that is easier to
understand for the reader and helps them understand previously unclear concepts. Review
articles can serve to benefit the author(s) of the research article as they provide the research with
more reviews for its improvement and these articles can increase the reputation of the author(s)
in the scientific community for their level of knowledge on the topic of research.

3. After attending your tutorials thus far, how have you further developed one (or more) of
the three skills you discussed in Tutorial 1 reflection?
One skill I have further developed from attending the tutorials so far is being able to critically
analyze and communicate the findings of an article. I further developed this skill by reading the
assigned article and review article provided in reading for week 3 tutorial and re reading the
article for clarification and making sure I understand the message being conveyed in the article.
If I still did not understand to some extent, I referred to the review article about how stem cells
with their clonogenicity, self-renewal, and multipotency are able to create lung parenchyma.
Through doing this, I was able to get exposure to many different articles and extract information
I thought to be useful for my use later.
Furthermore, I feel that I have gotten the opportunity to strengthen my verbal communication
skills through being in a breakout room with my group members and communicating with them
on the various things discussed in tutorial. We also got to know each other more and I feel that is
one of the important factors responsible for a successful group project as the group members
must know their members’ personality and be able to establish that they work well as a team.
