Historical Antecedents

Ancient Era
Compass
The first compass was invented by China
during the Han Dynasty between the 2 nd
century BC and 1st century AC. At first,
it was not used for navigation but for
geomancy and fortune-telling by the
Chinese and it was called the “South
Pointing Fish”. It was during 1050 when the said compass was used
for navigation. It was made of magnetized needle that was
connected to a piece of wood or cork that swam freely in a dish
of water. The designated end of the needle would point toward
magnetic north when it settled.

Medieval Era
Eyeglasses
It was in Italy at around 13th
century when Salvino D’Armate made
the eyeglasses who was called as
the “inventor of spectacles” in
Santa Maria Maggiore church in
Florence. It was made of Medieval
glass-blown lenses where these were
put into wooden or leather frames and then held in front of the
face or perched on the nose. These early spectacles included
convex lenses that may cure hyperopia
or farsightedness as well as
presbyopia, which is a typical sign of
aging.

Modern Era
Computer
The first computer was invented by Charles Babbage between 1833
and 1871. In 1833, he discovered that a far more generic design,
an Analytical Engine, was conceivable after working on his
breakthrough difference engine, which was meant to help in
navigational computations. Programs and data were to be fed into
the machine through punched cards, a technology that was popular
at the time for controlling mechanical looms like the Jacquard.
The device would feature a printer, a curve plotter, and a bell
for output. The machine could also punch numbers onto cards,
which could then be read later.
