SUPPLY ANALYSIS OF AYUNGIN IN RIZAL

The ayungin comprises more than 70% of the total fish fauna in Laguna de

Bay. The fish is an omnivore, with shrimps as its major food item. Sexual maturity

is attained at 3.63 cm for males, and 4.1 cm for females. The monthly average

number of eggs ranges from 19,886 to 55,864 per fish. Spawning takes place

throughout the year, with the peak period in August.

Despite declines in populations and commercial catches within Laguna de

Bay in recent years, the demand for ayungin remains strong and, thus, still

commands a relatively high price (from as low as P90 to as high as P250 per kilo

of whole fish, either fresh or dried, and depending on the season).

Information from the Philippine Statistics Authority reveal that ayungin catch in the country has

declined from 4,765 metric tons in 2002 to only 1,408 metric tons in 2018. Its overfishing by local

fishermen mainly for duck feeds and family consumption have

now made it scarce.

Populations have declined due to overfishing. In 1991 it was the most

abundant fish in Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines; by 2002 it was the third most

abundant. Sedimentation and pollution contribute to the population drop in the lake. The hatchery

technology, just like other technologies developed by the Aquaculture Department (AQD) of SEAFDEC,

will be for free and open to fish farmers interested to venture in ayungin culture.

A. Breeding Pattern through Years

The fish is being reared in captive breeding projects, in which it grows well on a diet of prawn

food and tubifex worms. It is dosed with hormones to

induce spawning
Unlike other freshwater fish, ayungin has no distinct breeding season. It breeds throughout the

year, with high rates of spawning from July to September, although good spawning occurs in December

and January. "The high spawning period coincides with the onset of the rainy season," the PCARRD

The brood stock are obtained from Laguna de Bay, Naujan Lake and Taal Lake. "Before the hormone

treatment, fishes are taken from their maintenance aquarium tanks and temporarily stocked in a basin

with two parts per thousand (ppt) salt solution," noted the Pcarrd publication, "Induced Spawning and

Larval Rearing of Ayungin." "The fishes are then sedated by soaking in iced water for about 10 seconds

or until they are immobilized." A volume of 0.02 milliliters of the prepared hormone - human chorionic

gonadotropin (hCG) - concentration is then introduced into the fish, both male and female. This is done

through intramuscular route along the dorsal portion of the body using a 26-30 gauge needle,

irrespective of fish size.

The treated fish are then allowed to recover in 2 ppt saline solution for about five minutes or

until they have fully recovered. Demand is high because locals find its flesh tasty and delicious. Ayungin

is mostly preferred over other edible native freshwater species. Authority reveals that ayungin catch in

the country has declined from 4,7b65 tons in 2002 to only 1,408 tons in 2018. Dr Aya plans to look into

cultivating market-sized ayugin as well as using it as part of a plan to stock fry in Laguna de Bay to

increase the wild population The supply has run thin due to overharvesting, and it is now rare in

markets, making it quite expensive. Near

B. Distribution

A vendor usually starts each day at 1 a.m. by preparing the dried ayungin –

14 kilos on good days, seven kilos during lean times – for the four-hour trip, which

starts with a boat ride from Talim island to Binangonan town at 3 a.m. Then takes
three jeepney rides until she reaches the wet market on 10th Avenue. She spends

P107 just to reach the market at around 7 a.m 2.

C. Conclusion

As a final point, supply in the quantity of commodity a seller is willing to sell at some price over a

certain period is dependent on its factors that influence the supply of ayungin in termed determinant of

supply. Some of the determinants of ayungin supply are fish pen, the number of suppliers, expectation

of suppliers, feedback from consumers, increase in tax, high wage rate, and its environment. The change

in prices of market suppliers which a producer can produce may cause a change in supply for the

product. Moreover, according to Dr. Aya, the hatchery protocol he developed can support the Philippine

government’s “Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa (BASIL)” program through the production of ayungin fry for

stocking in Laguna de Bay to increase the wild population.
