 Philippines Folk Dance Reflection (Tinikling, Itik – itik, and Cariñosa)

Philippines has unique traditional dances because of the different styles and different outfits that the
dancers wear when they dance. There are also different props that they use, for example in tinikling
they use bamboo poles so that they can do dance, Itik – itik is imitating the movement of the “ducks,
and Cariñosa is for courting dance. There are a lot of unique Filipino traditional dances because on how
they gracefully move and how they use different props to do the dances. Folk dances are significant in
our modern lives because we need to remember our culture and we need to preserve and to keep on
doing these traditional dances so that the next generation will know what the traditional dances that
were performed. The value of studying folk dances is because folk dances have tendencies to tell a story
behind in dance. There are folk dances that are like storytelling and it really portrays the value of
studying folk dances. As a student in order to promote Philippines folk dance I need to study it and try to
dance it because I think if a lot of people are trying to dance Philippine folk dances, I think that they will
be influenced to dance and maybe they will share it to their friends, and it will become popular again. To
preserve Philippine folk dance, I will try to teach it and spread information about Philippine folk dance
and tell them that it is important to study the different Philippine folk dance.

It is impossible to know when exactly dancing became a part of life in the Philippines. Many traditional
dances were designed to thank the gods for natural and agricultural events, such as rain and harvests.
The dances were performed during festivals and remembrances of past military victories, and still are
performed at celebrations of births and weddings in modern times. Many modern folk dance festivals
still feature ancient dances performed in costume of the tribal period of the Philippines. Philippine folk
dance mirrors the culture and tradition of the Filipinos. It has also been a source of culture identify of
the people. In this diversified country, there are also great diversity of dances in different forms and
dynamics that grow out of various times, situation and experiences.

People think folk dances are important because they help keep a culture alive. People have been doing
folk dances for hundreds of years, and there is value keeping that tradition alive. Folk dances are
important because they preserve the Philippine culture and pass it on to the next generation. They are a
uniting force to the Philippine people.
