• BriefOutline

Non-Destructive Tests (NDTs) of reinforced concrete (RC) structure helps us to

evaluate the health of existing structure without any intervention in it. This testing
approach is typically employed for capacity assessment of existing structures.
There are variety of NDTs available in literature, these tests include Capo test, Rebound
hammer test, Core test and Ultrasonic pulse velocity test (UPV).
Cut and Pull Out test provides us with a reliable estimate of in-situ compressive strength
of concrete. This test is in accordance with ASTM Designation C-900 and Euro standard
EN 12504-3. CAPO Test is the best choice in structure where it is hard to obtain a
concrete core or to cause damage to it like bridges, roads, buildings etc.
Rebound hammer test provides a convenient and rapid indication of the compressive
strength of the concrete. The rebound hammer is also called as Schmidt hammer that
consist of a spring controlled mass that slides on a plunger within a tubular housing.
Core test is a well-established method, generally performed in the area of concrete
industry to assess whether the suspect hardened concrete complies with strength-
based acceptance criteria or not; and sometimes it becomes the unique tool for safety
assessment of existing concrete structures.
In UPV test, the strength and quality of concrete or rock is assessed by measuring the
velocity of an ultrasonic pulse passing through a concrete structure or natural rock
formation.
The results of these tests contain randomness in results. A correlation or correction
factor is required to quantify the randomness associated with different types of NDTs.

• Objectives

The objective of this project is to compare the results of different test of Non-Destructive
Testing and calculate a correction factor by using regression analysis.

• Scope

The scope of the work is limited to available data from NDT test results conducted by
the material testing lab of Civil Engineering Department, with particular focus on Core
test, Capo test, Hammer test and UPV test.

• Methodology:

The methodology includes four main phases. In initial phase, to review the literature
related to different types of NDT. In second phase, to collect the data from material
testing lab and perform the regression analysis. In third phase, to develop a correction
factors among different types of test and finally compile the results in report form.

• Expected Outcomesof theproposed project

This will help to overcome the randomness involve in the results.

• Expected Budget
NOT APPLICABLE.
