Welcome to Firelands Church, a community of believers gathered by the Holy Spirit and committed to serving God and growing
together in Jesus Christ.
We invite all of our worshippers to stay for fellowship following the service

Call to Confession
Friends, we are in the presence of the ineffable and holy God. Let us humbly confess our need and ask for grace and mercy. Let
us pray.

Prayer of Confession
We confess to you, O God, that we have fallen asleep. We often go through the motions and live our daily lives without much
thought outside of ourselves. Forgive us for our shortsightedness. Forgive us for not being awake to the wonders and signs
that you are doing something new in our world and in our lives. Help us to seek you in the face of others. Call us into your
ways of love and justice, so that we might be fully awake, watching and waiting for your return in our world and in our lives in
a new way. Amen.

Silent Confession

Words of Assurance
O Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. As we wait for Christmas,
we know that Christ has already come into our world and lives, has already been born in us. We are renewed and restored. Go
and share the good news of God’s love and restoration. Amen.
*Response: Wait for the Lord Hymnal # 90
Wait for the Lord, whose day is near.
Wait for the Lord; be strong; take hear!

WORD
Prayer for Illumination
Almighty God, as you have given Jesus Christ to be Saviour and Lord, grant us now grace to accept and rejoice in our salvation
and in his lordship. Amen.

First Reading: Isaiah 40: 1 - 8

1.Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her
iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.
3. A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
5. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
6. A voice says, “Cry!”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
7. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass.
8. The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.

Second Reading Malachi 3: 1 - 4

3:1 Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to
his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.
2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers'
soap.
3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will
bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord.
4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

Gospel Reading Luke 1:68-79

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has visited and redeemed his people
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David,
70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 that we should be saved from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us;
72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him without fear,
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ.

*Affirmation of Faith: A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God.
Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor
and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed
and blessing the children, healing the sick
and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners,
and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified,
suffering the depths of human pain
and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead,
vindicating his sinless life,
breaking the power of sin and evil,
delivering us from death to life eternal.

COMMUNION

Invitation
Brothers and sisters in Christ, the Gospels tell us that on the first day of the week, the day on which our Lord rose from the dead,
Jesus appeared to some of the disciples and was revealed to them in the breaking of bread. Come, then, to the feast of our Lord
with joy and thanksgiving.

WORDS OF THE INSTITUTION

Hear the words of the institution of the Holy Supper of our Lord Jesus Christ, as they are delivered by the Apostle Paul: I received
of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the The Lord Jesus, on the night of his arrest, took bread, and after giving
thanks to God,
he broke it, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way he took the cup, saying: “This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, do this, as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of me.” Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord, until he
comes.

Prayer Of Consecration

The Bread and The Cup

THE BREAD Take and eat: this is the body of Christ which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of him.

THE CUP “This cup is the new covenant in the blood of Christ, which is shed for the remission of sins. Do this, as often as
you drink it, in remembrance of him.
(Please discard used communion cups in the available receptacles)

The Prayer of Thanksgiving

Almighty and everliving God, we sincerely thank you that in your great love you have fed us at this table with spiritual food, and
assured us of your goodness toward us, and that we are members of the mystical body of your Son, the blessed company of all
faithful people, and heirs of your everlasting Kingdom. And we pray, O Heavenly Father, that you assist us with your grace that
we may continue in this holy fellowship, and live forever to your glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns and is
worshipped and glorified with you, the Father and Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.
