Operating System
•Is a system software that manages computer hardware, software resources, and provides
common services for computer programs.
 Utility Programs
• Utility software helps to manage, maintain and
control computer resources.

• Operating systems typically contain the

necessary tools for this, but separate utility
programs can provide improved functionality

• Utility software is often somewhat technical and

targeted at users with a solid knowledge of
computers.

Malware
Malware is intrusive software that is designed to damage
and destroy computers and computer systems. Malware is
a contraction for “malicious software.” Examples of
common malware includes viruses, worms, Trojan viruses,

Network Intrusion
•is an unwelcome interruption or a situation
where somewhere private has an
unwelcome visit or addition
•A network intrusion is any unauthorized
activity on a computer network. Detecting
an intrusion depends on the defenders
having a clear understanding of how
attacks work.
•In most cases, such unwanted activity
absorbs network resources intended for
other uses, and nearly always threatens the
security of the network and/or its data.
Properly designing and deploying a network
intrusion detection system will help block
the intruders.
Computer Virus
•A computer virus is a malicious code designed to spread
from host to host by itself without the user’s knowledge
to perform malicious actions
•It imposes harm to a computer by corrupting system
files, destroying data or otherwise by being a nuisance.
•A computer virus spreads through removable media,
internet downloads, and e-mail attachments.
•A virus can also spreads while the user is viewing an
infected advertisement, visiting an infected website,
opening the attachment in the email, or clicking on an
executable file
 Spyware and Adware
Spyware is a type of program placed on a
computer or mobile device without the
user’s knowledge that secretly collects
information about the user and then
communicates the information it collects
to some outside source while the user is
online

Adware is a type of program that displays

an online advertisement in a banner or
pop-up or pop-under window on webpages,
email messages, or other Internet services

Firewall
•A firewall is the first layers of defense
against malware, viruses and other
threats. It scrutinizes and filters both
incoming and outgoing data. Users can
also customize rules and policies based
on their needs.

• For example, it’s often necessary to

create exceptions that allow certain apps
to pass through the firewall so that they
don’t constantly trigger false alarms.
Antivirus Program

•An antivirus program protects a

computer against viruses by
identifying and removing any
computer viruses found in memory, on
storage media, or on incoming files.

•Antivirus software scans your online

activity to make sure you are not
downloading infected files. New
viruses are coming out all the time, so
antivirus software needs to be
updated very frequently.

program that detects and deletes

Backup software is any application that enables the
