1 GMDSS log section A & B up to date


2 GMDSS Qtrly training to be logged down in GMDSS Log Book

3 Suitable entries to be present for Distress/Urgency and safety communication in the GMDSS log.
Laminate each individual instruction for distress communication procedure of the GMDSS station
and make them available near the console.Cancellation procedure for inadvertent alert to be
4 copied from ALRS and displayed.
5 The swl of the bollard pull and max pull by tug has to be mentioned in Pilot card.
Second mate is well aware of the company UKC policy and please refer to BMM for the elements
6 of passage planning as per company policy.
7 Watch schedule for current month to be posted
8 All the gyro repeaters to be aligned, check particularly with one in steering gear room.
9 Operating instruction for all the equipments are posted next to the equipment.

Regarding Radar , if the make is JRC , for JRC radar the attenuation values also needs to be
checked along with the distance of the arc from the center.kindly check your manual , the
10 attenuation value should be is in db.The strength of the magnetron depends upon db values.
The passage plan sheet in the remark column should also mention about the Currents/Tidal
11 Stream along with the other points.
The entries in deck log book should not be generic but significant to the conditions encountered.
12 If posn is plotted by Radar/visual same has to be mentioned in the entries.
13 Alteration of courses along with the position should be mentioned in the deck log book.
Record of entries in the log book showing that passage plan has been discussed with the bridge
14 team along with chief engineer.
15 The duty officer should be aware when to call master as per standing order.
16 Weather reports should be filed .

Kindly check for the latest Navarea warnings the same has to be filed, ensure that the file is
17 updated.Please check whether all the inforce EGC Nav area warnings is available on board.
18 All charts and publications are corrected upto last notice to mariners available on board

Check whether the chart catalogue has been corrected for the addendum received , please
ensure that even the blocks for the new charts are marked. Any new charts published further
should also be marked on the Chart Catalogue. For reference to the coordinates the second mate
19 has to check the Notice to Mariner
20 Second mate is aware of the all the Gmdss test.
21 D/OFF should be aware how to test the off course alarm.
22 No air bubbles in the magnetic and spare magnetic compass.
23 Master Bridge Day/Night order to be written on a daily basis at sea.
Change of Handsteering to be logged for each watch.eg (2000hrs C/O to hand steering, 2030 C/O

Check that there should not be any CFL lights fitted on bridge as the same inteferes with the
26 GMDSS frequency.
Please ensure that there is a procedure posted to test the navigation light alarm (This should
include light & buzzer test) .Tell him that the you remove the fuse and check the audible alarm,
27 not physically the lights are removed for same.
28 The Position Fixing interval should be as per passage plan.
29 Unnecessary marking of No Go areas to be removed.
30 Distance off to be entered in the movement book whilst passing single buoys.
Monitor deviations on various headings and identify if there is a consistent difference with the
31 deviation card.
32 Star sigths to be obtained to derive a position from multiple PL’s.
33 Masters standing orders to include Max wind force at which he is to be informed.
34 Confirm ARPA is using Log speed.

Brief the bridge watchkeepers(Officer + AB) regarding proper Fire Patrol.At no time is the AB to
go for fire patrol during watch period during night time.Inspectors often quiz the watchkeepers
for practice on board.The correct practice is to have the outgoing AB after handing over to the
36 incoming AB go for Fire Patrol round and report to the Duty Officer.This is also to be logged.
37 T&P notices plotted on voyage charts

39 Nav warnings to be taken into account for the voyage
40 T&P notices, Navarea warnings, sailing directions are segregated area wise / volume wise.
41 All navlights and x mas tree lights are operational
42 Gyro error is being taken in each watch and after large alteration of course.
Magnetic compass deviation curve is within last one year and the deviation noted is within 3 deg

44 Any gas indicators on the bridge are corrected for zero mark.
SQUAT tables are displayed for loaded and ballast conditions. UKC calculation sheet are
45 prepared.

Performance monitor test is required to be carried out every watch and recorded in Radar Log

48 Radar log, initial pages giving details of the equipment, including PM reading to be filled up.
All logbooks/record books are to be correctly and completely filled up with all relevant
information and no blank columns to be left in these books.Master signature as verification to be
49 present at relevant pages/location.
50 Con handing/taking over recorded in deck log book or bell book.
51 Load line info, draft/freeboard section, page 1 & 2 filled up.
Steering gear test check list – Emergency steering test not carried out regularly as per steering
gear check list. Some times it is ticked as done, sometimes crossed and sometime marked NA.
Officers are not sure whether it needs to be tested every time while doing steering gear test.
Emergency steering test etc. are basically a requirement for US call and hence should be marked
52 as NA until it is required by local regulations of other ports where vessel might be calling.
Auto supply service of charts and publications is under Nautisk now. Certificate is laminated and
53 posted on bridge.
54 Visual and radar bearings are used whenever possible.GPS cannot be the only mode.

Positions to be marked on chart where the echo sounder should be activated. This is to be
55 marked on the charts at 200m contour as per BMM and position to be marked on the chart.
56 Wheel over position marked properly for large alteration.
57 Let go anchor position heading recorded in log book in order to draw correct swinging circle
58 First aid kit at various places well stocked and not expired
