Activity #2

1. Who is Santiago Alvarez? How come his writing is a primary source?

- Santiago Alvarez was a revolutionary general and the founder and honorary president of the
Nacionalista Party's first directorate. Because of his ferocious bravery and devotion as leader at
the fight of Dalhican, Cavite, he was called as Kidlat ng Apoy (Lightning of Fire). He is the only
son of General Mariano Alvarez. He was also known as the "Hero of the Battle of Dalahican." His
writing is a primary source because Tejeros' convention is found in Chapter 32 of Gen. Santiago
Alvarez's memoirs, and as we all know, a memoir is written from the author's perspective, about
an important part of their life, so it's a primary source, and Alvarez was a direct participant and
witness to the election's events.
2. Who is Teodoro Agoncillo? How come his writing is a secondary source?
- Teodoro Agoncillo was a 20th-century Filipino historian who was widely regarded as one of the
best. He and his contemporary Renato Constantino were among the first Filipino historians to
gain notoriety for promoting a strongly nationalist perspective of Philippine history. His writing
was classified as a secondary source since he is a historian, which means he only researches,
studies, analyzes, interprets, and documents historical facts. He hasn't had the same hands-on
experience as Alvarez.

4. Form your internal and external criticisms over the two sources.
- My internal criticisms of these two sources are that Alvarez's writing was thorough, and
because there are dialogues between characters, we can truly assume that the author was
present at the time. While Agoncillo's writing focuses on Andres Bonifacio's trip, it appears that
Alvarez failed to incorporate a longer version of the past in his memoir, despite the fact that he
put so much effort into research for this book. The meaning expressed in the source was clearly
understood by both.
- Both author shows the authenticity, validity, or reliability of each source for my external
criticism. Alvarez as a witness itself on the election and Agoncillo, as a distinguished historian,
did a lot of research for us to be able to know what else happened at that convention.
