INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISSERTATION PAPER
MBA (PROFESSIONAL) PROGRAM

Introduction
1. Dissertation is a capstone experience for the students of MBA (Professional)
Program that allows them to integrate knowledge and skills developed in the
classroom and apply them in a professional setting. It is an important and challenging
element of university study. A student will have to undertake this assignment to
complete his/her graduate program in Bangladesh University of Professionals. This is
indeed a key indicator of his/her true capabilities as a business student and
researcher.

Aim
2. The aim of this instruction is to provide guidelines to the students, the
supervisors and others who are directly or indirectly involved with dissertation paper.

Details of the Program

3. Details of the program are appended below:

a. Duration and Outline of the Dissertation Paper. Dissertation is a 17-


Week Research experience for the schedule of students of MBA (Professional)
Program of BUP. Out of these 17 weeks, first 05 weeks commence from the
final/6th trimester and remaining 12 weeks after the final trimester. The schedule
of various activities for dissertation paper is given below:

b. Procedure. The procedure is appended below:

(1) The topic for Dissertation Paper is to be selected concerning a


business problem.
(2) Students will be placed under different faculty supervisor.
Students will finalize the research proposal on contemporary business
issues in consultation with respective Faculty Supervisors within 1st 3
weeks of the program. Then the research work will continue as per the
above schedule described at paragraph 3a.
(3) All students will have to meet their respective Faculty Supervisors at
least once in a week at a pre-designated time, preferably on the weekend
evening, in order to discuss on the progress of the work and guidance.
(4) The student must submit a draft report two weeks before the final
submission deadline to respective Faculty Supervisor for his/her
comments.
(5) Students will have to submit 02 (two) copies of the Final Report to
Program Coordinator and one copy to the respective Faculty Supervisor
by 20 June 2020 (Total 03 copies).
(6) The Dissertation Paper should contain minimum 20,000 words or
about 100 pages.
(7) The students will have to defend the Dissertation Paper in front of a
committee.
c. For Faculty Supervisors Only. List of Supervisors along with the list of
students is given at Annexure A and the roles of the Supervisors are given at
Annexure B. The roles of the students are given at Annexure C.

d. Formatting and Report Writing Guidelines. The detailed guidelines for
formatting and writing of the report will be given by the respective Faculty
Supervisor. The students must consult their respective Faculty Supervisor at the
beginning of the program to obtain their guidelines and instructions.
e. Guidelines Regarding Supervising and Approval. The Faculty
Supervisor will provide necessary guidelines regarding the work and approval of
the research proposal, draft report and the final report.
f. Evaluation and Defence.

(1) The dissertation is a graded academic event, which is equivalent to


6 credits.
(2) At the end of the dissertation program, all students will be
evaluated by the Defense Committee basing on the following aspects:
(a) Submitted Report.
(b) Presentation and viva-voce.
(c) Overall performance during the program.

(3) Composition of Defense Committee will be as under:

(a) Chairman: Dean, Faculty of Business Studies.


(b) Internal Evaluator: Concerned Faculty Supervisor
(c) External Evaluator: Professor/Associate Professors/ Assistant
Professors from any reputed university.

(4) The Faculty Supervisor will compile the result and submit the same
to the Dissertation Program Coordinator within a week after the conduct of
the defence.
Repeating Dissertation Paper

4. Dissertation is a graded program of 6 credits. A student will have to earn a


passing grade in the Dissertation Paper for awarding of MBA Degree. If a student fails
to earn the same, he/she will be allowed to repeat the program (rewriting the
report/redoing the whole dissertation program) maximum for once. The student will be
withdrawn, if he/she fails to attain a passing grade after redoing once.

5. In Rewriting or Redoing of the Dissertation Program, if a student fails to earn a


passing grade due to problem in the report requiring minor modification(s)/change(s),
he/she will be allowed to rewrite the whole or part of the report and submit the same
within two weeks.

Conclusion
7. Successful completion of dissertation is a requirement for achieving MBA degree.
The dissertation being an important event, the students are expected to carry out the
research work using their knowledge acquired in the MBA (Professional) Program and
past experiences in an innovative approach.
