you in imparting the lessons to the learners while considering the physical, social and
economical restraints in teaching process.

The use of Teacher-made Educational Module aims to surpass the challenges of

teaching in a new normal education set-up. Through this module, the students are given
independent learning activities, which embodies in the Most Essential Learning Competencies
based from the K-12 Curriculum Competencies, to work on in accordance to their capability,
efficiency and time. Thus, helping the learners acquire the prerequisite 21 st Century skills
needed with emphasis on utmost effort in considering the whole well-being of the learners.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the
module:

DISCUSSION
LO3: Treatment and Process of Farm Waste

Types of Treatment Process

1. Composting

Composting is a method in which organic matter present in agricultural waste is

decomposed by aerobically/ anaerobically through a biochemical process and converted into
humus.

Types of Composting

A. Decomposition

 Nadep System- uses a wide range of organic materials such as crop residues, weeds
and forest litter with an end product of a fertilizer

6
 Vermiculture Decomposition- is a process using species of worms to create a mixture
of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast.

 Anaerobically Decomposition- is a renewable energy technology, where materials are

placed in a container and are broken down by microorganism to create biogas.

B. Landfill - a place to dispose of refuse and other waste material by burying and covering it
with soil, especially as a method of filling or extending usable land.

Disclaimer: The pictures are used to put emphasis and to show concrete example for deeper understanding of the lesson. Department of Education-
Cebu Province does not claim or own the presented pictures. Links for the sources are found in the reference part of this module.

7
2. Recycling

-Process to change waste into new product

-Prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw
materials, and reduce energy usage.

-Reduce air pollution from incineration and water pollution from land filling

-Key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the
“Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”.

Disclaimer: The pictures are used to put emphasis and to show concrete example for deeper understanding of the lesson. Depart ment of Education-
Cebu Province does not claim or own the presented pictures. Links for the sources are found in the reference part of this module

3. Incineration- is the modern and most hygienic method of disposal of dry refuse.

Cebu Province does not claim or own the presented pictures. Links for the sources are found in the reference part of this module.

Concerns about Agricultural Waste Management

 If not manage properly, agricultural waste can pollute the environment.

 The degradation of water quality can impact adjacent waterways and groundwater both
onsite and offsite.
 Nitrates can found in fertilizers and agricultural waste runoff can seep into groundwater.

8
Benefits of Agricultural Waste Management

 The reuse of animal waste in farming operations can reduce the quantity and hauling
cost of commercial fertilizer.
 The contribution of animal waste increases the organic matter content of soils, which
increases nutrient availability for crops and improves the water holding capacity.
 Good waste management reduces the instances of well water contamination and
minimizes surface water pollution.

LO5: Perform Housekeeping

5s of Good Housekeeping

 It includes the principle of waste elimination through workplace organization.

 It is an organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri(sort), seiton
(systematize), seiso (shine), seiketsu (standardize) and shitsuke (sustain)

SYSTEMATIZE
•Clearly •Keep the

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

Directions: Answer the following question/statement below. Write it on your answer sheet.

1. How do agricultural wastes harm the environment?

WHAT I CAN DO

Test 1: Directions: Look for possible waste produced in the agriculture sector.
Take note of the things that are usually thrown away or disposed of after they have been used
for their original purpose. Classify them according to 3r’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). Think
