802. 11 st andar ds: 802. 11a, b, g, n but t he wirel ess co mponent s of Windows are dependent
upon t he foll owi ng:
1. The capabilities of t he wi rel ess net wor k adapt er. The i nst alled wirel ess networ k
adapt er must support t he wi rel ess net wor k or wireless securit y st andar ds t hat you
require.

2. The capabiliti es of the wirel ess net work adapt er dri ver. To enabl e you to confi gure wirel ess
net wor k opti ons, the dri ver for the wirel ess net work adapt er must support the reporti ng of
all of its capabiliti es to Windows.

To pr ot ect your wirel ess net wor k, you must configure aut henti cati on and encr ypti on opti ons:

1. Aut henti cati on. Co mput ers must pr ovi de either vali d account credenti al s (such as a user
na me and pass wor d) or proof that they have been confi gur ed with an aut henti cati on key
bef or e bei ng all owed t o send data fra mes on the wirel ess net work.

 2. Encrypti on. The cont ent of all wirel ess data fra mes i s encrypt ed so that onl y t he recei ver can
i nter pret its cont ents.

avail abl e i n 2 modes:
a. Personal. A pre-shared key ( PSK) is used f or aut henticati on and you pr ovi de the sa me key
to each user. It is desi gned f or s mall offi ce/ho me offi ce (SOHO) i nfrastruct ure mode
net wor ks.
b. Ent er pri se. An 802. 1x authenti cati on server di stri butes i ndi vi dual keys to users that have
a “ wi rel ess” desi gnati on. It is desi gned f or medi u m and l arge i nfrastruct ure mode net works

The use of t hese security prot ocol s.

1. 802. 11 open syst e m. No aut henti cati on and no encr ypti on. Thi s is not recomme nded,
unl ess t here are ot her device t hat provi des aut henticati on.

2. 802. 11 WEP. No key manage ment and weakness in encr ypti on. Thi s is still wi del y
used, alt hough not reco mme nded. Typi call y used i n publi c access, such as coffee
shops or airport.

WP A, WPA2. Personal and Ent er pri se modes. Personal uses PSK. Ent er pri se uses RADI US based
aut henti cati on usi ng 802. 1X. WPA- Ent er pri se or WPA2- Ent er pri se i s the reco mmended security
pr ot ocol s f or l arge organi zati ons, wher eas WPA- Personal or WPA2- Personal may be the choi ce f or
ho me or s mall offi ces.

To confi gure a wirel ess net wor k, you must have a wi rel ess AP t hat physi call y connect s t o
your net wor k and a wireless net wor k adapt er i n your cli ent comput ers. A wi rel ess AP uses
radi o waves t o br oadcast its SSI D.

To confi gure a wirel ess AP, you must ent er its SSI D and confi gure a valid TCP/ I P address on
your net wor k. Typi call y, a wirel ess AP has an admi ni strat or page t hat can be accessed by an
i nt ernet br owser, by usi ng its default IP address. Dependi ng on t he manufact urer, different
wi rel ess APs have different default IP address t o st art wit h. Several wirel ess APs can also be
confi gured from co mmand pr o mpt by usi ng t el net co mmand-li ne t ool.

You can use t he foll owi ng met hods t o confi gure a Wi ndo ws 7- based cli ent to connect t o a
wi rel ess net wor k:
1. Connect to a Net work dial og box. Thi s di al og box is avail abl e from many l ocati ons
i n Windows 7, such as fro m t he Control Panel.

2. Co mmand li ne. The new netsh wl an co mmands i n t he netsh. exe t ool enabl e you t o
confi gure wirel ess net works and t heir setti ngs manuall y.

3. Gr oup Poli cy. Net wor k ad mi ni strat ors i n an Active Direct or y direct or y servi ce
environ ment can use Gr oup Poli cy t o confi gure and depl oy wirel ess net work setti ngs
centrall y t o do mai n me mber co mput ers.

Wi t h Windows 7, connecti ng t o a wirel ess net work has never been easi er. If t he Wirel ess
Access Poi nt ( wirel ess AP) is confi gured t o advertise its Ser vi ce Set Identifier (SSI D), t he
Wi ndo ws 7 cli ent can detect t he si gnal and aut omaticall y creat e a wirel ess net wor k pr ofile
and set t he confi gurati on t o connect t o t he wirel ess net wor k.
The first fra me shows t he Manage Wirel ess Net works wi ndows. If you choose t o add a
wi rel ess net wor k manuall y, t here are several settings t hat you can confi gure i n Windo ws 7
when creati ng a wirel ess net wor k pr ofile. You have t o confi gure t hese settings t o mat ch t he
wi rel ess AP t hat you want t o connect t o.
The next fra me shows t he pr operties of t he a wireless net wor k pr ofile. At the connecti on t ab,
you see t he general settings and connecti on settings. Expl ai n t hat t he wirel ess net wor k
pr ofil e na me can be different t han t he SSI D.

Ge neral Setti ngs

1. SSI D. Ever y wirel ess networ k has an SSI D.

2. Net wor k Type. There are t wo opti ons: Access point and Adhoc net wor k.

Connecti on Setti ngs

The foll owi ng setti ngs confi gure how t he Windo ws 7 client connect s t o a wirel ess net wor k.
1. Connect aut omati call y when t his net wor k is i n range.

2. Connect t o a mor e preferred net wor k if avail abl e.

3. Connect even if t he net wor k is not broadcasti ng its na me ( SSI D).

det er mi ne what t ype of aut henti cati on and encr ypti on are used t o connect to a wirel ess
net wor k.
1. No aut henti cati on (open). If you sel ect t his security t ype, t wo opti ons are avail abl e for
t he encr ypti on t ype: None and WEP.

2. Shared. If you sel ect t his securit y t ype, onl y WEP is avail abl e for t he encr ypti on t ype.

3. WP A ( Personal and Ent erprise). In t he personal mode, you pr ovi de t he sa me net wor k
securit y key t o each user. In t he ent erprise mode, an aut henti cati on server distri but es
i ndi vi dual key t o t he users. If you sel ect t his securit y t ype, t wo opti ons are avail abl e
for t he encr ypti on t ype: TKI P and AES.

4. WP A2 ( Personal and Ent er prise). Si mil ar t o WPA, it also has t he Personal and
Ent er prise mode, as well as t wo opti ons for t he encr ypti on t ype: TKI P and AES.

Si gnal strengt h is critical t o how your wirel ess networ k perfor ms. To assist users, t he
avail abl e net wor ks list i n W i ndows 7 i ncl udes a sy mbol t hat desi gnat es si gnal strengt h. Use
t he i mage i n t he sli de t o sho w t hat a strong si gnal has fi ve bars, and i ndi cates a cl ose wirel ess
net wor k wit h no i nt erference.
In cases where wirel ess si gnal strengt h is t oo l ow because your co mput er is t oo far from
wi rel ess AP:
1. Ens ure t hat your co mput er is as cl ose as possi bl e to t he wirel ess AP.

2. If you are unabl e t o get cl oser t o t he wirel ess AP, consi der i nst alli ng an exter nal
ant enna t o your wirel ess net wor k adapt er.

3. Al so, check for physi cal obj ects t hat may cause i nterference, such as a t hi ck wall or
met al cabi net and consi der re movi ng t he physi cal obj ects or repositi oni ng the wirel ess
AP or t he cli ent.

4. Add wi rel ess APs t o t he wi rel ess net wor k whenever appli cabl e.

In cases where you cannot even see t he wirel ess net wor k at all, consi der t he foll owi ng

1. Check t hat your wirel ess net wor k adapt er has t he correct dri ver and its wor ki ng
pr operl y.

2. Check your co mput er for an ext ernal s wit ch for t he wirel ess net wor k adapter.

3. Check t hat t he wirel ess AP i s t urned on and worki ng pr operl y.

4. Check whet her the wirel ess AP i s confi gured to advertise its SSI D.

Ans wer: The I EEE 802. 11b and t he I EEE 802. 11g st andar d use t he S- Band Industri al,
Sci entific and Medi cal (IS M) frequency range, which is rangi ng from 2. 4 t o 2. 5 GHz. Thi s
frequency range is also used by devi ces such as microwave ovens, cor dl ess phones, baby
monit ors, wirel ess vi deo ca mer as and Bl uet oot h adapt ers, whi ch may cause i nt erference t o
t he wirel ess net wor k si gnal. The I EEE 802. 11a uses t he C- Band I S M, whi ch is rangi ng from
5. 725 t o 5. 875 GHz. Therefore, fe wer devi ces will cause i nt erference wit h wi rel ess net wor k
usi ng t his st andar d.
