MODULE 5 - ENG 4

LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

1. Think about this question: WHO DO YOU THINK IS MORE MASCULINE, YOUR CLASS NERD OR YOUR
BASKETBALL STAR? EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.

Being self aware and passionate about something in life makes a man manly, between the two, the more
manly for me is the class nerd because manliness is not all about big hands, muscles and physically fit, its
about how you perceive your dreams in life. A man who knows what he wants. Someone who cares about
himself, as well as others around him. Someone who is a hard worker, whether it be a labor or desk job. I also
have always loved handy men with lots of knowledge about life in general (street smart, not just book smart).
I think there’s too much pressure put on men to be “manly.” The definition of manliness is constantly
changing and varies from person to person. I think a man is “manly” when he’s true to himself and the
people around him. He’s not afraid to show his personality or his emotions despite whatever backlash he
may receive. Men are subjected to a lot of standards regarding being tough and not showing their emotions.
Yet I think it’s more manly when a man is sensitive, empathetic, romantic, passionate and intelligent, It
means he’s confident enough not to worry about the standards. While Hollywood would make you believe
it’s all about the body and face, the reality is that what is manly and what is not comes down to taking
responsibility for the well being of those around you and being able to deliver on their expectations.

I’m a girl, and although this might just be up to personal taste, but for me, the more masculine is the
class nerd, I’d pick intelligence over looks. It may be considered slightly unconventional but I have always
found intelligence a mega turn on, and have always preferred intelligent men. They tend to be extremely
funny, which is also very manly and hot, some are maybe slightly narcissistic but a good handful of them use
that as a sort of defense mechanism to justify alienation from their peers. I have found that I have had far
more chemistry with intelligent men as opposed to merely attractive ones. And looks fade out with age, so if
the basis of manliness is solely upon looks, the longevity of that relationship has already been jeopardized.
But then again, “intelligence” is a bit of an umbrella term, in my opinion I believe there are several types of
intelligence, and having any one is attractive for me and who is more manly. Stop worrying about whether all
girls in general find intelligent men attractive because certainly many women do. Trying to generalize all girls
as finding one or the other attractive is arbitrary, and instead try to find someone who appreciates you for
your own character.

Then, identify a male celebrity whom you think exudes manhood/manliness. List down five reasons to
support your choice.

CELEBRITY NAME: NAM JOO HYUK

REASONS:
 He is a real man he treats everyone else around him with respect and compassion, and has the humility
to know that he is not perfect.
 He is willing to help someone in need, but also has enough time to take care of his own emotions.
Someone who is as steady as a rock, but human nonetheless.
 He is a real man, he is a man who doesn’t worry about what it means to be a “real man.”
 He is real man, he knows how to respect women. Let it be woman as a mother, wife, sister, daughter,
friend or a teacher, stranger etc.
 He is real man, he is a man who knows that one woman is enough to be loved for the whole life and to
be happy with.

2. You may draw, sketch or print a picture of the celebrity you have chosen for visuals.

Then answer the following questions:

1. What are your different ideas on
manhood/manliness?
Manliness comes from our expectations towards
those we look to for protection and to take responsibility for us. Starting with the model that our parents
present. The man is usually bigger and stronger and we automatically look towards that individual to protect
us. We continue to do that fairly unconsciously all of our lives, even men. While Hollywood would make you
believe it’s all about the body and face, the reality is that what is manly and what is not comes down to
taking responsibility for the well being of those around you and being able to deliver on their expectations.
2. What is/are the dominant notion(s) of manhood/manliness? Why do you think so?

Manliness is simply the subjective interpretation of a person’s masculinity. Masculinities are those
behaviours, languages and practices, existing in specific cultural and organizational locations, which are
commonly associated with males and thus culturally defined as not feminine. In other words, manliness, and
masculinities, reflect cultural norms, values, expectations, and stereotypes. They are not invested in biology,
they are not determined, they are not predictable and they have nothing with genitalia. Bearing this mind,
then, it is important to recognize that notions of manliness change over time, are contingent, fluid and
flexibile, and are, therefore, not the same the world over.

EVALUATION:
1. What are the different techniques of defining?

There are different techniques of defining. The most common is the formal definition in which you are
given a term to be defined and you define the term by giving the class where the word/term belongs (the
genus) and the characteristics that distinguish the term from other terms, known as the differentia. The next
technique is an extended definition it is needed to define abstract concepts. It allows you to broaden your
definition by using analogy, metaphors, comparison and contrast, descriptions, analysis, functions,
etymology, and semantic origin. Aside from the formal definition, you have added definition by etymology,
definition by analysis, definition by contrast, and definition by example to your reservoir of knowledge.
Other techniques of defining include definition by synonym, a definition by function, definition by
analogy, definition by comparison and contrast and definition by negation.

2. What is the importance of defining?

Definitions are, however, important, potentially very important.  A definition has the potential to provide
clarity.  At their best, definitions act like a compass, providing a lost reader with several potential directions
from which to proceed. Definitions are useful in practically any field. They help us think and communicate
more clearly, which in turn help us understand our businesses (our customers, our product, our processes,
our value-proposition, etc) better.

One of the reasons that it is important to understand why definitions matter is because the way
we define things helps determine how we think about them. And how we think about things  can affect how
we act. This podcast addresses the importance of how we define things and how we define other people.

3. What is a concept paper? How is it different from a reaction paper?

A concept paper is a brief paper written by a university student around a research question before

undertaking the research. The paper is about two or three pages long and provides key details about the
research, such as the question, purpose, and methods. A concept paper should be based on scientific
findings or exact and factual data. On the other hand, a reaction paper is a formal paper which indicates the
author's particular feelings or critique over a particular topic or issue that needs to be resolved.
Basically, reaction papers help society realize how others feel about what they do. If they see that people
reacted negatively then they, of course, will be encouraged to do something to turn that negative  reaction to
a positive one.
4. What is the purpose of the concept paper?
Concept papers generally serve the purpose of providing in-depth discussion of a topic that the writer
has a strong position on, all research projects need a concept paper: a short summary that tells the reader
what the project is, why it is important, and how it will be carried out. Even if no one else ever reads it, the
concept paper helps a researcher spot holes in her or his project that might later prove fatal. From the
standpoint of those reviewing the paper, it allows them to see which papers show the most promise. From
the perspective of the writers, it helps them refine the objectives and arguments, and perhaps to see that
their ideas will not lead to a good product.

The terms "concept paper" and "proposal" are often used interchangeably as they can be used for the
same function. The concept paper may also be used as an instructional tool that may have developed as a
result of extensive research, committee input and/or as a result of the outcome of a current project. In
addition to providing guidance for implementation of a program, a concept paper could also discuss best
practices, philosophies and other related issues that the writer believes action should be taken on in the near
future.

5. What are the characteristics of a good concept paper?

A good concept paper has a Clear, succinct, direct, and detailed purpose statement. Must state a
consideration and adherence to the organization/institution’s ideals (VMGO). Has an explicit description of
the procedures, timeline, personnel assignments and the budgetary requirements for accomplishing tasks
included in the concept. And the Emphasis on the significance of the concept to the target beneficiaries and
the organization/institution. Concept papers can contribute to society because it can be used as a proposal,
because it is a summary of an issue, because it can be an instructional tool, it can discuss best practices,
clarifying concepts.
