COURSE SYLLABUS – CHEM 1

Course Title: Inorganic and Organic Chemistry

Course Description:
This course deals with the study of the basic concepts of inorganic chemistry
necessary for understanding the important concept sin organic chemistry. The course
covers basic concepts of organic compounds – their structures, properties, reactions,
synthesis, and their practical applications.

Course Outcome:
The student must be able to apply basic knowledge of organic chemistry to
actual situations. The student must recognize the significant connection between
chemistry, health, environment, and the treatment of diseases.

Outline of Topics:

1 Part I. Inorganic Chemistry
Subject introduction, Atomic structure and electronic configuration,
quantum
mechanized model of the atom, the periodic table

2&3 The nature of chemical bond, types of chemical bond, the formation of
covalent
bond, the Lewis molecular structure and the line-bond structure,
hybridization,
types of hybridization

4 The intermolecular forces and properties of compounds, Types of IMF

5 Acid and base theories, pH and pOH

6 Part II. Organic Chemistry


Introduction to organic chemistry, characteristics of the element C,
functional
groups, types of organic reaction, mechanisms of organic reaction

7 Classification of HC, Structure, nomenclature, and conformations of


alkanes and
cycloalkanes, isomerism and stereoisomerism in cycloalkanes, physical
and
chemical properties of alkanes and cycloalkanes

8&9 Alkanes and Alkynes: structure and nomenclature, properties,


geometric
isomerism in alkenes, synthesis, and reactions.

10 MID-TERM EXAMINATION

11 The Aromatic hydrocarbons: the structure of Benzene, nomenclature, and


structure,
Electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction, polycyclic, and heterocyclic
aromatic compounds

12 & 13 Alcohols, Ethers, Phenols, and Thiols: Nomenclature and structure,


classification of
alcohols, properties and uses of alcohols, ethers, phenols and ethers,
synthesis
and reactions of alcohols, ethers, and phenols

14 & 15 Aldehydes and Ketones: The nature of the carbonyl compound,


nomenclature and
structure, properties, synthesis, and reactions

16 Carboxylic Acids and Derivatives: Occurrence and properties of carboxylic


acid and
derivatives, nomenclature and structure, synthesis and reactions,
important
carboxylic acids, esters, amides, acyl chlorides and their biological
uses.

17 Amines and Alkaloids: structures and classification of amines, properties


and
reactions, alkaloids

18 FINAL EXAMINATION

Course Requirements:
