2 - Roles of Agribusiness Sector

1. MALAGOS AGRI-VENTURES CORPORATION 

Malagos Agri-Ventures Corporation is part of a family-owned group of


businesses harnessing nature as an industry resource. Malagos Agri-Ventures
produces world-class chocolate, bearing the tag “Proudly Philippine-made.”
Malagos is one of the pioneering brands that has made a global mark for
Philippine chocolate products, especially Davao-sourced cacao beans. They’ve
helped make the global chocolate industry notice our country. As Malagos raises
the quality of its products, the company continually rakes in global awards for
cacao production and chocolate-making, catching the eye of the international
market. In 2017, their cacao beans were selected as among the Top 50 Beans of
the World. In the last three years, they have brought home 28 international
awards. Malagos Chocolates has been aggressively sharpening its eye for
quality and service, and a by-product of its efforts is the standards it has set for
the rest of the industry in terms of product quality and business development.

2. RFM CORPORATION

RFM Corporation (RFM) was incorporated on August 16, 1957 as Republic


Flour Mills, Inc. to manufacture flour in the Philippines. From its original business
of flour milling, the Company diversified into poultry and livestock production and
areas of food manufacturing that includes flour-based products, margarine, milk
& juices, canned and processed meat, ice cream, and bottled mineral water.
RFM has invested P1.7 billion in capex in the previous years to expand or
upgrade its ice cream, milk, pasta and flour production as well as warehousing
capabilities.

Their Selecta Fortified Milk is their way of providing affordable and ready-to-
drink milk to the Filipino family. They hope to contribute to a healthier populace
thru their RTD milk products. At the same time, their affordable Selecta Ice
Cream products continue to lead the category and provide livelihood to big and
small retailers including the thousands of sari-sari stores across the country.
They plan to sustain the growth of their key brands and businesses in light of the
strong economic momentum and consumer income growth.

3. PAMPANGA SUGAR DEVELOPMENT COMPANY

The Pampanga Sugar Development Company built the first Filipino-


financed sugar central in Pampanga, Philippines. Its existence became a catalyst
for the exponential growth of San Fernando, the capital of the rich sugar-
producing province of Pampanga. Sugar regions served as very models of a
cash-crop society in the Philippines, and their leaders became among the most
influential persons in the colonial order of the Spanish and American regimes.
Sugar growers led the way to a transformation of the Philippine countryside as
they converted deep jungle into extensive sugar haciendas, and major portions of
western Negros and northern Pampanga felt this impact.

Throughout its operations, PASUDECO was a driving force in the economic


progress of San Fernando providing employment and other opportunities to
many Kapampangans. The sugar central master plan included the construction
of roads and railroad tracks to transport sugar cane from the fields of the towns
of Pampanga.

4. PHILIPPINE PHOSPHATE FERTILIZER CORPORATION

Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corporation manufactures and distributes


agricultural fertilizer The Company produces phosphatic fertilizer and sells its
products through wholesalers and retailers throughout the Philippines, Vietnam,
Thailand, and Indonesia. It is the biggest phosphate producer in Southeast Asia
with an output of not less than one metric ton annually. The phosphate
production has its byproduct which will be manufactured into a strong
construction component that would drastically bring down the cost of socialized
housing under the Duterte administration.

The company also operates a 14.21 MW coal-fired thermal power plant within
the Leyte Industrial Development Estate in Isabel, Leyte, where its fertilizer plant
is located. The Energy Regulatory Commission awarded the firm a Certificate of
Compliance in regards to its operation of the power plant. A world class and
independent electric power industry regulator that equitably promotes and
protects the interests of consumers and other stakeholders, to enable the
delivery of long-term benefits that contribute to sustained economic growth and
an improved quality of life.

5. ALASKA MILK CORPORATION

Alaska Milk Corporation produces liquid, powdered, and ultra-heat treated


milk. The company also produces ready-to-drink milk and chocolate-flavored
milk. It provides affordable nutrition across different life stages to every Filipino
family – nurturing, caring, reliable and trustworthy. “Wala pa ring tatalo sa
Alaska” remains top of mind as Alaska’s tag line, intimately creating a special
place in the hearts and minds of every Filipino. In reality, Alaska Milk’s story as a
company is one of “David and Goliath.”  Multinational companies were the
Goliaths with their huge advertising budgets and global resources.

Amidst limited resources, the Company casts a giant shadow in everything it


does, from its consistent brand image to its excellently executed activation
programs nationwide and in the retail trade. The Company embarks on the next
chapter of its history, identifying new growth opportunities as it expands its
businesses into new territories, plays in new platforms, launches new brands and
competes globally on a world-class level.  Yet, always mindful of its role in
nation-building – providing nutrition at all stages of life, promoting an active and
healthy lifestyle while delivering sustainable profitability to its stakeholders.
