PROPERTIES OF NATURAL FIBRE

A. WOOL: Animal fibre. This is found in Britain, Argentina etc.

1. It does not wrinkle

2. It is weak when wet

3. It is attacked by cloth moth and other insects

4. It shrinks easily when treated with hot water

5. It is elastic when touched.

6. It is warm and good for temperate countries.

7. It smells as burning feather when burnt.

8. It can lose its shape if not well controlled, especially when wet.

B. SILK: It is commonly produced in countries like France, Italy, Japan etc

1. It is elastic

2. It is warm to touch

3. It is weak when wet

4. It is an expensive fibre

5. It is smooth and fine

6. It is very strong.

7. It will burn under hot iron.

8. It can be damaged easily by friction and pressure.

9. It is not resistant to chemicals.

C. COTTON: It is mostly found in Asia, America, Northern parts of Nigeria etc

1. It is strong and durable

2. It wrinkles easily and irons well

3. It is easy to wash

4. It is cool and comfortable to wear

5, White cotton can be bleached easily

6. It can be dyed easily

7. It is easy to sew.

8. It can be attacked by mildew, if stored in a damp condition.


9. It cheap and readily available.

10. Strong detergents can be used for washing it.

11. It can be ironed with hot iron even when dry.

12. It is good for all household articles and dresses.

D. LINEN: it is common in Russia, France etc

1. It is stronger than cotton.

2. It does not dry easily.

3. It creases and frays badly.

4. It can withstand high temperature.

5. It burns easily.

6. It is expensive and durable.

7. It does not soil easily.

8. It shines naturally and looks attractive after sewing.

9. It is cool to wear.

10. it does not shrink. (it is shrinks resistant).

PROPERTIES OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES

A. RAYON(VISCOSE)- It is made from treated cotton linters or wood pulp with chemicals

1. It is soft.

2. It is not strong when wet.

3. It is cool to wear.

4.It has smooth surface.

5. It does not mildew easily.

6. It resembles silk in appearance.

B. ACETATE- It is made from treated wood pulp or cotton linters with acetic acid

1. It is not strong when wet.

2. It is elastic.

3. It is soft.
4. It is uncomfortable in hot weather.

5. It has a silk-like soft attractive appearance.

6. It dries easily.

C. NYLON- Made from all synthetic polyamides

1. It is very strong.

2. It is very elastic.

3. It does not absorb much water.

4. It is easy to wash.

5. It does not require ironing because it does not shrink.

6. It is durable.

7. It is not comfortable to wear in hot weather.

8. Light in weight.

D. POLYESTER- It is made from many petroleum chemicals

1. They are very strong.

2. Dries easily.

3. Easy to wash.

4. It is warm to wear.

5. They are not very stretchy.

ASSIGNMENT

Visit a tailor’s workshop, collect as many pieces of different kinds of fabrics as possible, then
make an album with the fabrics collected. Write their properties.
