FORREST GUMP

1. Based on the movie, what is moral courage? Limit your answer to 100 words only. (10 points)

In the film entitled “Forrest Gump”, moral courage refers to one’s behaviour of doing the right thing and standing
on what an individual believes in. The lead actor, Forrest Gump itself, portrays the role of standing up for values
such as honesty, fairness, compassion, respect and responsibility in the movie. In fact, throughout the story he
showed willingness to overcome fear/impossibilities and stand up for core values. Hence, his character simply
explains how one’s decision making and choices may not be popular or understood by others but strongly keep
one’s integrity whole.

2. How did the main actor (Forrest Gump) portrayed the principle of moral courage? Limit your answer to
100 words only. (10 points)

The main character Forrest Gump portrayed the principle of moral courage by standing up and fighting for what
he thinks is right and just. He also showed his bravery in helping those who are in need. In the movie, he showed
that he will do anything it takes to help and protect Jenny because he loves her. And during the war, where they
have to run away because of the simultaneous bombing, he was not hesitant and bravely run back to his
colleagues, crying for help and brings them to a safer place. Since his childhood, Forrest has always been
courageous and doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind. He’s kind to other people and always lives the values he
learned from his mother. He is not afraid of what others have to say about him instead, he just does what he thinks
he needs to do.

3. In your opinion, how did Forrest Gump developed moral courage? Limit your answer to 50 words only. (10
points)

Forrest Gump developed moral courage through his experiences in his life. Even though he receives negative
consequences, he still has brave behavior and helps people in need. As he came from a loving mother who taught
what life is, Jenny also taught him what to do when danger happens.

4. Observers and experts said that Forrest Gump’s have an IQ of 75 (below average) and has a diagnosis
according to DSM-IV autistic disorder criteria, ruling out possible alternative diagnoses such as Rett’s
disorder or childhood disintegrative disorder according to observational evidence (Applied Behavior
Analysis Education, 2016). In your opinion, if Forrest Gump was not as he is (low IQ and with intellectual
disability), do you think he would have developed such moral courage as depicted in the movie? Explain
your answer. Limit your answer to 150 words only. (20 points)

In our opinion, it's a yes or no. Because life is full of twists and turns, we don't know what will happen now and in
the future. If Forrest Gump were not as he is, he would still develop or may not develop such moral courage as
depicted in the movie. As we can see, Forrest Gump developed his moral courage through what's happening in his
surroundings or through his environment. If he doesn't teach well by his mother or the people around him, he will
go to another path to not develop moral courage. Just like Jenny's experiences, her life became miserable because
of her background or experience from an abusive father. Maybe if Jenny didn't go through that experience, she

might not also be a despairing person, and her life may be decent. People grow through experience if they meet
life honestly and courageously, and this is how character is built.
