1. Who are the main characters. Describe each.

The two main characters are Lord Randal and his mother. After reading the ballad, I can say that
Lord Randal is a handsome young man. Because of his handsome face, he is always prone to
women swarming him. With all those women he met, he had many options to choose from. As
for his mother, I can say that she is loving and caring in the way she shows concern for her son
throughout the ballad.

2. What does each character want? What emotions do they show?

Throughout the ballad, the mother desires to know that her son is safe by answering her
questions. These questions include "where has he been", "where did he get his dinner", and a
lot more, showing emotions of concern and uptightness. As for Lord Randal, he wants his
mother to prepare his bed for him to rest because of his exhaustion from hunting and visiting
the wildwood. He showed emotions of weariness and sorrow for his true love had hurt him not
only physically but emotionally.

3. What happened to Randal?  Why did it happen to him?

Lord Randal had experienced a tragic event in his life. He experienced poisoning through his
dinner date with his true love leading to his death. From what I have learned, Lord Randal is
fated to experience this. He did not only satisfy himself with all the girls he had been with, but
he had also hurt his true love because of his unfaithfulness. With him being perfidious, he
encountered his true love's vindictive side.

Dramatic subject- The ballad focused on the tragedy of love betrayal which led to the death of

young man?"

handsome young man?"

"What became of your bloodhounds, Lord Randal. my son?" - "What became of your
bloodhounds, my handsome young man?"

"O I fear ye are poisoned, Lord Randal, my son!" - "O I fear ye are poisoned, my handsome

Mysterious event/ Missing details- Every time Lord Randal's mother asks him, he withholds the
complete details of what really happened to him, prompting the mother to ask another
question.
