概要:
There are debates around carbon capture and storage (CCS) schemes. Scientists believe CCS plans are
necessary in fighting global warming and meeting the emissions target. However, green groups claim CCS has
not achieved desired effects and advocated renewable energy, which scientists criticized because they think
CCS technology is mature. The government hopes CCS can be less expensive. (57 words)

1. W: Tony, are you sure it’s not your headphone? Isn’t yours red?
M: No, my headphone is yellow. And my wristwatch is pink.
Q: What color is Tony’s headphone?
2. W: I hear that 200,000 yuan has been given to the school to improve the library.
M: That’s old news. As far as I know, this is only half.
Q: According to the man, how much money has been given to improve the library?
3. W: Tom, I heard your department started a flexible working program. How do you like it?
M: Generally, I am more productive when working from home than wasting time stuck in traffic.
Q: What is the man’s attitude towards the new program?
4. W: Did you watch the baseball match on Channel IV last night?
M: No, I missed it. Anyway, the two teams last night are not my cup of tea.
Q: What does the man think of the match?
5. W: Could you come to the concert with me this weekend, or do you have to prepare for your exams?
M: I still have a lot to do… but maybe a break would do me good.
Q: What will the man probably do?
6. M: Why don’t you tell me Sophie is coming to town?
W: I’m sorry. It completely slipped my mind.
Q: What does the woman mean?

W: Just put it on the floor for the time being. I will put it away later.
Q: What are they discussing?
8. W: Many people can’t wait to retire, but you don’t think retirement is such a good idea, do you?
M: No, retirement is like a disease. After about six months, most people get bored.
Q: What does the man think of the retirement?
9. M: Do you trust John’s advice about not buying that house?
W: You’re right to be cautious, but this time I think we can take John’s word for it. He has no reason to
lie to us.
Q: What does the woman mean?
10. W: Have you received the new chapter of Miss Wang’s novel? I think there is something wrong with my
Internet connection.
M: No, I haven’t received it either. The suspense is killing me.
Q: What does the man mean?

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
For any music enthusiast who wants to start learning an instrument from the very beginning, the ukulele
is a good choice. Basically, the ukulele is a guitar-like instrument with only four strings, originating from the
US state of Hawaii. It is extremely beginner-friendly because notes can be played directly with your bare
fingertips. It’s easy to perform without hard pressing.
I started learning the ukulele two years ago and practiced for hours every week. I found it helpful to
deconstruct complicated music into simple tunes for beginners and then gradually add special sweeping to
enrich the sound. In this way, I learned to perform Hedwig’s Theme, a well-known track from Harry Potter,
just a few days after picking up the ukulele. Step by step, my sense of achievement grows and motivates me to
further polish my skills.
Although the ukulele seems like a simple instrument, it is really hard to learn all of its techniques and
become a ukulele master. Although there are a large number of ukulele players in the world, there are only a
few professional ukulele performers. For me, the ukulele is a stepping stone to dive deeper into the field of
music and continue my musical journey.

11. What can we learn about the ukulele from this passage?
12. What is the helpful way that the author has found to learn the ukulele?
13. What is the passage mainly about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

This has certainly been a tough year, but in times like this, it’s good to know that the world’s scientists
have been working extra hard. They are storing seeds. Currently, there are over 1,000 seed banks located all
over the world.
How does the seed bank work? First, scientists from all over the world collect endangered and useful
wild species, put them in a paper or cotton bag to prevent them from getting bad, and send them to the seed
bank. Once the seeds arrive, they’re dried and preserved in a special room. After that, X-rays confirm that the
seeds are undamaged and that no insects are hidden inside. The seeds are then frozen, stored in sealed
containers and then placed in huge freezers at -20℃ for long-term storage. The low temperature allows the
seeds to be preserved for decades and re-awakened when required.
One of the most famous seed banks, Svalbard International Seed Bank, opened in February 2008, and
now holds more than one million seed samples. It is located deep in a frozen Arctic mountain in
Longyearbyen, Norway. The special construction makes sure that it remains undamaged in case of any natural
disasters or even bombings.
As Earth is facing huge challenges like climate change, these seed banks are surely significant to
safeguard the future of the world’s food supply.

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

M: Today we are honoured to have Dr. Nancy with us. Doctor, thanks for coming on our show.
W: It’s my pleasure.
M: Now, can we start with the question “What is creativity?”
W: Well, creativity can be viewed as a process. This process usually starts with a person who’s trying to figure
out a better way of doing a task. That person must think about the problem in a new way and come up with a
solution.
M: Hmm, I see. Do you think the ability to be creative is inborn or not?
W: Well, no one knows yet if the ability is the result of the environment or a genetic makeup. However,
creativity does seem to run in certain families.
M: Is that so?
W: Yes. You see, Johann Bach was the most famous member of the Bach family, but there were 20 other
famous musicians who came from the same family.
M: That’s very interesting. Does that mean that creativity only appears in great people?
W: Certainly not. Creativity can also be found in everyday tasks such as cooking or gardening.
M: Oh, really? Now Dr. Nancy, can you describe to us what the actual creative process is?
W: Actually, many great artists describe it as a dream-like state during which ideas just come to them in a
flash.
M: What is going on in the brain during that flash?
W: No one knows for sure, but researchers suggest that part of the brain becomes very active, linking up ideas
or thoughts in previous unknown ways.
M: I see. Thank you very much, Dr. Nancy.
W: Not at all.
(Now listen again, please.)

Questions:
17. What do we learn about creativity from the dialogue?
18. Why does Dr. Nancy mention the Bach family?
19. What is likely to happen in a creative process?
