Team 3
Value: Compassion

BOOM point: Resurrection Life in Jesus

Cognitive domain: Children will know that they will have new life through Jesus for
He is the resurrection of life.

Affective domain: Children will desire to stay close to God and put their trust and
hope (new life) in Him.

Psychomotor domain: Children will choose to obey to tell the good news to their non-
Christian friends when God opens the door for them.

Memory John 11:25

Verse: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in
me will have life even if he dies.

Explanation: Jesus is God and He is the Creator of life and that is why He can give us life.
When we believe in Jesus, we have spiritual life that death cannot conquer.
This life that Jesus gives us when we believe and trust in Him lasts forever.
Even when we leave this earth, this life continues with Jesus in heaven. That
is why Jesus says we will live and not die.

Memory Verse Review:

- Do memory verse review in any ways you want so that able to help the
children to understand and remember the verse.

Game: Father Says

- One person is designated as Father, others are the players.
- The players must only obey commands that begin with the words `Father
says’ . But if Father simply says, “touch your nose” without first saying
`Father says”, players must not touch their nose. Those that touch their
nose are out of the game.

Object Live to die

Lesson:
Materials Checklist:
 Picture of a pet that has died

1. Request from friends or ask the children for some pictures of their pet that
had died.
2. Show the pictures to the class – talk about the lovely pet that died due to
old age or sickness.
3. Everything that lives will eventually die. Animals die, flowers die, people
die, fishes also die and we all know it and accept it as part of God’s plan.
4. When our pets die, the whole family is sad because it is part of the family.

Lesson Dead or alive?

Introduction:
Materials Checklist:
 Some dried leaves and some fresh leaves

 One week before the class, pluck a few leaves from the tree and leave
them in the sun to dry.
 On the day of the class, pluck a few fresh leaves and together with the
dried ones, bring to the class for the lesson introduction.
 Show both types of leaves and ask the children to talk about the
difference between the two.
 Ask them: “Is there anything we can do to make the dead brown leaves
look like the newly plucked ones?”
 Now that the newly plucked leaves have been cut off from the tree, what
will happen to them? (they will die and become dried up like these –
show the dried up leaves)
 Do you have the power to bring life back to something that is dead?
 In today’s Bible lesson, we will discover that Jesus has power over death.
In fact, He had brought people who had died back to life.

Bible
Lesson: John 11:1-45
The Death of Lazarus (Video)

1. There was a man named Lazarus who was sick. He lived in the town of Bethany,
where Mary and her sister Martha lived. 2 Mary is the woman who later put
perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. Mary’s brother was
Lazarus, the man who was now sick. 3 So Mary and Martha sent someone to tell
Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” 4 When Jesus heard this he said, “This
sickness will not end in death. It is for the glory of God. This has happened to
bring glory to the Son of God.” 5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and
Lazarus. 6 But when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was
for two more days. 7 Then Jesus said to his followers, “Let us go back to
Judea.”8 The followers said, “But Teacher, the Jews there tried to kill you with stones.
That was only a short time ago. Now you want to go back there?” 9 Jesus
answered, “Are there not 12 hours in the day? If anyone walks in the daylight, he
will not stumble because he can see by this world’s light. 10 But if anyone
walks at night he stumbles because there is no light to help him see.”
11 After Jesus said this, he added, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. But I am
going there to wake him.” 12 The followers said, “But Lord, if he can sleep, he
will get well.” 13 Jesus meant that Lazarus was dead. But Jesus’ followers thought that he
meant Lazarus was really sleeping. 14 So then Jesus said plainly, “Lazarus is
dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there so that you may
believe. But let us go to him now.” 16 Then Thomas (the one called Didymus) said to
the other followers, “Let us go, too. We will die with him.”

Jesus in Bethany

17 Jesus arrived in Bethany. There he learned that Lazarus had already been dead and in the
tomb for four days. 18 Bethany was about two miles from Jerusalem. 19 Many Jews had
come there to comfort Martha and Mary about their brother. 20 Martha heard that Jesus
was coming, and she went out to meet him. But Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to
Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But I know that
even now God will give you anything you ask.” 23 Jesus said, “Your brother will rise and
live again.” 24 Martha answered, “I know that he will rise and live again in the
resurrection[a] on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.
He who believes in me will have life even if he dies. 26 And he who lives and believes in me will
never die. Martha, do you believe this?” 27 Martha answered, “Yes, Lord. I believe that you
are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the One who was coming to the world.”

Jesus Cries

28 After Martha said this, she went back to her sister Mary. She talked to Mary alone.
Martha said, “The Teacher is here and he is asking for you.” 29 When Mary heard this, she got
up quickly and went to Jesus. 30 Jesus had not yet come into the town. He was still at the
place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews were with Mary in the house,
comforting her. They saw Mary stand and leave quickly. They followed her, thinking that she
was going to the tomb to cry there. 32 But Mary went to the place where Jesus was. When
she saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother
would not have died.” 33 Jesus saw that Mary was crying and that the Jews who came with her
were crying, too. Jesus felt very sad in his heart and was deeply troubled. 34 He
asked, “Where did you bury him?” “Come and see, Lord,” they said. 35 Jesus cried. 36 So
the Jews said, “See how much he loved him.” 37 But some of them said, “If Jesus healed the
eyes of the blind man, why didn’t he keep Lazarus from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38 Again Jesus felt very sad in his heart. He came to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a
large stone covering the entrance. 39 Jesus said, “Move the stone away.” Martha said,
“But, Lord, it has been four days since he died. There will be a bad smell.” Martha was the sister
of the dead man. 40 Then Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would
see the glory of God?” 41 So they moved the stone away from the entrance. Then Jesus
looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you heard me. 42 I know that you always hear
me. But I said these things because of the people here around me. I want them to believe that
you sent me.” 43 After Jesus said this, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come
out!” 44 The dead man came out. His hands and feet were wrapped with pieces of cloth, and
he had a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take the cloth off of him and let him
go.”

The Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus

45 There were many Jews who had come to visit Mary. They saw what Jesus did. And many
of them believed in him.

1. Select a few children to act out the scripts for this
lesson or use the following narration to highlight today’s lesson to
the children.
2. Lazarus had two sisters Mary and Martha; and they were good
friends of Jesus. One day Lazarus was very sick and in those days you can
die if you become very sick because there were not many trained doctors and
there was also no medical science. They sent a messenger to Jesus asking
Him to come and heal Lazarus. But Jesus waited for two more days and then
He told the disciples he was going to Bethany.

3. The disciples came together to Bethany with Jesus and when
they arrived, Martha met him on the road. She told Jesus Lazarus would not
have died if Jesus had been here. But she also told Jesus that she believed
the Father would do anything Jesus asked of him. Her faith in Jesus was very
strong and Jesus said Lazarus would rise again.
Martha replied that she knew he would rise again in the resurrection on the
last day. Jesus answered, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who
believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and
believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" Martha said she believed
Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the God.

4. Martha went back and told Mary that Jesus had arrived and she
also told Jesus that Lazarus would not have died if he had been around.
Jesus was very sad because He loved this family very much and He wept for
them because He is a compassionate God.
Jesus went to the tomb and ordered them to remove the big stone that
blocked the tomb. Martha protested that it was too late because by now the
body would smell from decay. But Jesus reminded her of the glory of God. He
thanked the Father in heaven for answering his prayer and to the amazement
of the crowd, He cried with a loud voice and ordered Lazarus to come out
from the tomb. And Lazarus came out of the tomb, still wrapped in the burial
cloths and all those who saw the miracle put their trust in Jesus.

Application: Resurrection Victory in Jesus

 Jesus is a compassionate God and when He came to Bethany, He also
wept for the death of Lazarus.
 However Jesus did not come earlier but allowed Lazarus to die so that He
could be resurrected from the dead and the people would know that He was sent
by the Father as the Messiah.
 Jesus came back to life 3 days after He was buried and He is now in
heaven offering us the free gift of eternal life.
 Jesus came to free us from the tombs of sin so that we can also be
resurrected from the dead when we put our trust in Him.
 He has compassion for all of us and died for our sins. Therefore we must
also have compassion for those who do not know Jesus and bring them to Him by

(They either go to hell or heaven.)
3. What did Jesus say He is in the memory verse today? Let us say the verse.
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes
in me will live, even though he dies.
4. What does this verse mean to us?
(When we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, we have the gift of eternal life in
heaven, we will go to live with Jesus in heaven forever. This means even though our
bodies die, our spirit and soul will go to heaven to live forever with Jesus.)

Discussion:  Why did Jesus delay going to Bethany? Mary, Martha and their friends
all believed Jesus could heal and didn't know why he would let Lazarus die. There are
many today who do not understand why God doesn't answer all their problems. Discuss
why Jesus allowed Lazarus to die and why God may allow troubles in our lives today.
- Raising Lazarus from the dead was a remarkable demonstration of Jesus’ power and
glory of God.  He showed the power of eternal life triumphing over death to the crowd
and to us.  God wants us to increase in our faith and continue to trust him when we have
struggle.

APPLICATION FOR KINDY AND PRIMARY 1

Martha said she believed, if we believe that, too, we can have new life forever with
Jesus! When a butterfly comes out of its cocoon, we could say that it has new life
because then it’s beautiful and free. That’s sort of how it will be when we get new life in
heaven when we believe in Jesus.
Craft work
MAKE BUTTERFLIES TO REMIND US THAT JESUS GIVES US HOPE OF ETERNAL
LIFE.
Butterfly has new life when it emerges from its cocoon, so will we have new life when we
go to heaven. (show picture and tell them the butterfly life cycle)
- A colored construction paper and a pencil.
- Show kids how to trace their handprints on the paper in such a way that the fingers
are pointing awayfromoneanother.
- Color the handprints to look like butterfly wings. Write their name on the butterflies,
and then cut them out.
Jesus has promised to anyone who believes in Him and has a relationship with Him a
gift of eternal life.
Think of one person who you know needs to know about the hope you have in Jesus.
e.g. friend from school, a family member etc
- Encourage children to write on their butterflies the name of someone they will tell
about new life is Jesus this week.

PRAY: Ask the children who have not received the gift of eternal life from Jesus yet and
pray for them. If there is no one, ask them to pray for loved ones who have not received
the gift of eternal life. Have compassion for them just as Jesus has compassion for us.
