Theme 2: Caribbean Economy and Slavery

Objectives:

Project Based Learning Goals

1. Students should be able to describe The TransAtlantic Slave trade in Africans.

2. Students should be able to describe the experiences of the slaves upon arrival in the
West Indies

3. Students should be able to explain the organization and layout of the West Indies
Sugar Planation.

Goal 1: Map work – The Triangular Trade

Students should do a graphical representation of the triangular Trade/The Transatlantic Slave


Trade highlighting the following:

i. Write a paragraph which explains what is meant by “the triangular trade”.

ii. The countries that participated in the slave trade

iii. The items that were traded at each leg of the trade

iv. The map should be properly labelled

Goal 2: Personal Experiences of Enslavement

Students should: Imagine that you were a young West African caught in a slave raid during

the 16th and 17th century. Choose from ONE of the following; story, letter, song ,Power

Point, Story board to give a FULL description of your experiences from the point of capture

to arrival in the West Indies. The following should be included:

i. The title should be “Personal Experience of Enslavement”


ii. Include information about how you were captured and transported to the Slave ship

iii. Description of/experiences during The Middle Passage

iv. Experience upon arrival in the West Indies

A storyboard is a graphic organizer that consists of illustrations or images displayed in


sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic

Goal 3: Organization and layout of the Sugar Plantation and Use of Labour

Make a sketch map of the layout of a typical 18th century sugar plantation. The sketch should
be properly labelled.

List the buildings found on the plantation and their uses. Explain why the buildings were
located in specific places. Describe how land was used on the plantation. Please note that
pictures have been included to assist you.

Visual Appeal (5 marks) – colourful and clean looking; labels are easy to read

Personal Experiences of Enslavement

Title – title, student’s name

Required Elements of the method used (5 marks) – title, setting, format

Content (15 marks) – point of capture, middle passage, arrival

Illustrations (5 marks) – appropriate and relevant illustrations

Grammar – (5marks) correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation

Attractiveness (5 marks) - design, layout, neatness

Organization and layout of plantation; Use of labour

Required elements (10 marks) – title, labelling

Content (20 marks) – list of buildings and functions, use of land and labour, location of
buildings and materials used and reason for same

Grammar (5 marks) – correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization

Presentation (5 marks) – design, layout, neatness
