Splicing of Pipes
1 OBJECTIVE
In addition to the notes on individual drawings, the instructions presented in this
specification shall apply in general to all relevant fabrications made following TAKRAF
drawings and shall be read together with the said drawings.
2 SCOPE
This specification covers splicing of pipes in general structural fabrication including
load bearing structural members and does not cover splicing of pipes to be used for
bracing of steel structures
3 QUALITY REQUIREMENT
3.1 FABRICATION
Each joint shall be finished to meet the requirements mentioned below.
3.1 Length of one single piece of pipe shall not be less than 1 metre.
3.2 All welding shall be full penetration single-V, or single-J. The longitudinal weld on each
piece shall be located at 90 degrees from the adjacent pieces.
3.3 After welding, the pipe will not have any kink, bend or dent at the joints and the
individual pieces shall be co-axial.
3.4 Straightness deviation measured on pipe surface longitudinally, locally over any distance,
shall be within 0.5 in 1000 of base length and as per following table.
Length Max. straightness
mm deviation
mm
0 - 5000 2.5
5001 - 10000 6
10001 - 15000 8
15001 - 20000 10
20001 - 30000 12
30001 - 40000 15
Above 40000 20
3.5 Roundness deviation for the pipe at the joint shall be within 1 in 100 of diameter.
3.6 The maximum weld bead reimbursement shall be maintained within 2mm of the pipe
surface.
3.7 Joint details/welding/testing shall be as specified in drawing.
3.8 In the absence of any testing specified in drawing, DP, UT & MP tests shall be carried
out over 100% length of weld.
4 SURFACE PROTECTION
Refer to ACS number mentioned in Title Block of a drawing, or, painting specification
for the project.
