LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
In this lesson, students will participate in a lesson introducing and learning subtraction. They will learn
Overview what subtraction is and how it works through the use of eating their fruit snacks. By the end of this
lesson, students should understand what subtraction is and how to solve simple problems.
Objectives Students will be able to… determine how many fruit snacks have been taken away from the starting
number to reach the difference.
I understand what “subtraction” means
Learning Target I understand the equation: ____ take away ____ is _____
I can use my active listening skills to listen and participate in the lesson
I can have a “calm body” throughout the lesson and demonstrate self control.
-understands how to count to ten
Necessary Prior -understands how to group objects (fruit snacks in this case)
Knowledge -understands what it means to “take away”
Teacher prepares a subtraction “mat” for each student, which is blank and has spaces for the fruit
snacks and writing the subtraction equations

Materials ➢ Subtraction “Mat”
➢ “Subtraction to 10” assessment worksheet
Warm-up Discussion (5 min)
● Has anyone ever been SUPER hungry and ate the entire snack that they had?
● Well, everytime you eat that snack, there is less and less in the bag until it’s gone!
Introduction/ ● This brings us to our new lesson today: Subtraction!
Hook ● Now, we are going to watch a short video on how Cookie Monster himself views subtraction!

Students will be assessed on their ability to understand what it means to “take away” and solve the
equations by crossing out the pictures or counting on their fingers.
As a class, before lunch, each table will be asked to count how many friends are sitting at the table.
Teacher will then ask two friends from that table to line up, and one student will be asked to try and say
Closure Activity or write on the board the equation which just occurred.
EX: 4 friends at the table, 2 friends line up, there are 2 friends left; 4-2=2
No Accommodations needed for the class (certain students leave to go to Mrs. Elman’s room everyday
Accommodations when I come in)
This lesson will take about an hour to an hour and a half. Be patient with students, for sometimes there
Teacher Notes are more or less fruit snacks in the pack.
