lesson, students should understand what subtraction is and how to solve simple problems.

● Computation and Estimation

Standards of
K.6 The student will model and solve single-step story and picture problems with sums to 10
Learning and differences within 10, using concrete objects.

Essential What is subtraction?

Questions If I take one number away from another number what does that equal?

Objectives Students will be able to… determine how many fruit snacks have been taken away from the starting
number to reach the difference.
I understand what “subtraction” means

Learning Target I understand the equation: ____ take away ____ is _____
I can use my active listening skills to listen and participate in the lesson
I can have a “calm body” throughout the lesson and demonstrate self control.
-understands how to count to ten
Necessary Prior -understands how to group objects (fruit snacks in this case)
Knowledge -understands what it means to “take away”

Teacher prepares a subtraction “mat” for each student, which is blank and has spaces for the fruit
snacks and writing the subtraction equations
➢ Pencil
➢ Fruit snacks
Materials ➢ Subtraction “Mat”
➢ “Subtraction to 10” assessment worksheet
Warm-up Discussion (5 min)
● Has anyone ever been SUPER hungry and ate the entire snack that they had?
● Well, everytime you eat that snack, there is less and less in the bag until it’s gone!
Introduction/ ● This brings us to our new lesson today: Subtraction!
Hook ● Now, we are going to watch a short video on how Cookie Monster himself views subtraction!

1. Fruit Snack Subtractin’

● Students will have to work alone on this lesson due to Covid and the fact that food is involved.
Students should ONLY be touching their own food. Students do work in pods, so they will be
able to look at their shoulder partners to see if they are doing the lesson correctly.
● Sesame Street video will be played, introducing what subtraction is to the class: (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnBeGmjWnK4 ) Then a fun Subtraction dance song will
play to get the class excited to learn: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwQKugrFmJQ my
class particularly loves Jack Hartman)
● Teacher will then pull up a short subtraction powerpoint redefining subtraction and explaining
the equation “ ____ take away ___ is ____”
● Teacher will then pass out the “Subtraction Mat” and fruit snack packs (give time to help open
Instructional fruit snacks”
Activities ● Each Student will be asked to count how many fruit snacks that they have once they have
opened their package of fruit snacks. Teacher will be using the DocuCam to help count and
show how/where to write each number
● Students will then place the assigned number of fruit snacks on one sign of the minus sign, and
the other assigned number of fruit snacks on the other side of the minus sign.
● Teacher will explain how to count to subtract the “difference” and write that number after the
equal sign
● Process continues until fruit snacks are all gone.
● Students will then be passed out a subtraction worksheet which is an assessment to see if they
understood the lesson.
● Dance Party at the end (first song only: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E-hVlzBWYY )
Homework None (kindergarten doesn’t have homework)

Key Vocabulary -understand what it means to take away

or Concepts -practicing having self control for first grade and not eating fruit snacks until told to do so
Exit Ticket/End Assessment: “Subtraction to 10” Worksheet
-students will be given a “Subtraction to 10” Worksheet which the teacher will help the whole class
complete using the DocuCam
-Certain students who are picked will be called up to help “cross out” the pictures to help solve the
Assessments problem.
-worksheet collected at the end to see students’ understanding.

Students will be assessed on their ability to understand what it means to “take away” and solve the
equations by crossing out the pictures or counting on their fingers.
As a class, before lunch, each table will be asked to count how many friends are sitting at the table.
Teacher will then ask two friends from that table to line up, and one student will be asked to try and say
Closure Activity or write on the board the equation which just occurred.
EX: 4 friends at the table, 2 friends line up, there are 2 friends left; 4-2=2
