MID-COURSE ASSESSMENT In 2005 more people found work as ecologists than any
other job in the environmental industry, with
(UNITS 1–6) Environmental Consultant being the destination for only
three percent. This could be due to the fact that only
experienced postgraduates may have been in a position
SECTION A: LISTENING to apply. The most popular destination job for graduates

third of all graduates, whereas in 2010 only just over a

2 more Nature Conservation Officer jobs available in 2014
1a 2c 3b 4a 5b 6c than in 2005. 2010 saw the highest level of non-linked
jobs being taken up by graduates and probably reflected
the general economic situation as unemployment was at

graduates, whereas the latest figures show that only six
percent did this.

SECTION B: READING However, there is no evidence to prove that these

spinoffs would not have been developed independently
3 of a space programme. In fact, the amount spent could
1c 2a 3d 4a 5c 6c 7b have been used to eradicate hunger on the planet and
to manage our precious resources here on Earth. The
4 ever-increasing population is causing immense problems
1D 2A 3B 4B 5A 6D 7A 8C on our planet and it is a well-known fact that if there is
prosperity, then birth rates decline, so money should be
spent on improving living conditions here before being

5 In addition, there is a strong possibility that one day the
astronauts or spaceships may even bring back deadly

SECTION D: WRITING
9 Sample answer
Along with the Earth’s oceans, space is one of the last
remaining areas which hasn’t been much explored by
man. Despite the trillions and trillions of dollars that
have been spent, we still haven’t discovered another
planet upon which we could survive. As a result, many
criticise the amounts spent, believing that that money
could be better used sorting out the problems on Earth.
Those in favour of space exploration believe it is
necessary in order to make new discoveries and gather
knowledge which would benefit mankind. They are
convinced that much of the technology and many of the
products we use every day, such as computers and solar
energy, would not have been developed without space
exploration. For example, a solar-powered fridge was
developed and this has major significance for developing
countries where there is no electricity, providing safe
storage for food which could otherwise cause illness if
left out in the heat of the day. Furthermore, they might
find new materials and medicines, ways of cleaning
water and growing food to save planet Earth.
