My decision to pursue a Master’s Program in Social Work at the University of
Western Australia (UWA) has emanated from my immense interest in the field of
Community development and its impact on eradicating poverty across the world.

Research Interest: My research interest is not just to understand the intersection

between language, culture, public health, and social work practice, but to
integrate knowledge and skills toward developing a sense of social identity.

Relevance of the subject: It amazes me how social workers use their analytical,
communication, volunteering, and problem-solving skills to address and solve
social problems like access to affordable health care for women and minority
groups, peaceful coexistence, or working with local government to improve on
taxation policies or affordable housing and transportation. This art of solving
social problems and developing new insights using statistical methods and data
has inspired me to specialize in Social Work by pursuing a master’s program at
your University. I have dully learned that the discipline combine theory, research,
and practice where students analyses appropriate communication and engagement
practices, community resources, and Indigenous models for practice; discuss past
and contemporary social policy, examine different world views and models for
culturally sensitive practice; and articulate a human rights and social justice-
based framework with varying contexts.

With this degree, I aspire to gain mastery over statistical and analytical tools and
decision making having the opportunity to expand my knowledge of ways of
working with local structures and to locate that knowledge within a human-rights
informed social work practice framework. And to learn appropriate culturally
responsive frameworks and Indigenous models for practice.

Linkage between previous school and new school: Right from my high school,
social studies subjects fascinated me. Even I found myself curious enough to know
more about various historical concepts, actors, and how way have shaped human
civilizations, I was more interested to know what motivated civil rights leaders like
Dr. Martin Luther Jr., Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi named but few were
social workers who changed the course of human history through their service to
improve the lives of others. Being impressed with their successes, I always wanted
to know about practices and approaches. As I was keen to get more knowledge
about this subject, I purposely selected Bachelor of Arts; Majoring in Linguistics
and minoring in Sociology as an undergraduate degree, in which most of the
subjects were related to human cultures and civilization through communications.

During my undergraduate studies, I offer modules like Early World Civilizations,

Communication skills, Introduction to Politics, Principles of Reasoning, and
Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, and Sociolinguistics among others. I
demonstrated knowledge of sociological concepts as they apply to individuals,
groups, as well as historical concepts, and how people, ideas, institutions, and
nations have changed over time, and what lessons can be learned from these past
experiences. The broad knowledge I have gained from both Linguistics and
Sociology classes with critical thinking and writing skills are necessary for the
Master’s Program in Social Work at the University of Western Australia (UWA)
with a concentration on Public Health. My undergraduate experience at the
University of Sierra Leone opened me up to global views in new but challenging
ways. During under graduation, I found myself more interested in learning various
languages especially indigenous ones I realized that Language also plays a great
role in making the right-spurring social movement and change.

Work Experience/Community service: Soon after under graduation, I got an

opportunity to enter the development world and gain practical knowledge in the
field of community development. I have worked for the Diamond Youth
Transformation Initiative Africa as Director, The position has allowed me to offer
an array of skills in optimizing cross-regional integration, organizational design,
cross-functional collaboration, spearheading learning initiatives across
nationalities and evaluating their effectiveness, creating leadership and
professional development programs, aligning business priorities with
organizational strategy and implementing creative solutions to meet Africa’s
largest and most effective youth leadership platforms reaching over 34 African
cities.

Being so interested in environmental conservation, food security, and eradicating

poverty, I founded a community-based organization named “Youth in Agriculture
and Environmental Protection” one of the largest youth community-led programs
in Agriculture in Sierra Leone. Through my leadership, we have created jobs and
improve food security for over 5000 community people including women, young
adults, and children.

Interests: I am convinced that the outstanding faculties, mentorship labs,

internship, and research tools available at the University of Western Australia
(UWA), would provide the opportunity that uniquely matches my career goals, and
would further connect me with a diverse network of social work professionals
around the world working on healthcare, food security, and the environment. Also,
the program courses; Foundation of Social Thinking and Identity, Social Work
Methods, Research Methods in Social Work, Field Placement to name but few are
innovatively designed and would facilitate my gaining new skills in research, and
policy development as they align with my career goal to be a Public Health Social
Worker in the next five years.” While there, my learning interest is to also explore
innovative approaches such as design thinking, systems thinking, negotiation, and
implementation science that leverages the intersections of theory, practice, and
research. I am also interested in Public Health, but my passion to study Social
Work has convinced me that the study area combines both theoretical, scientific
(quantitative methods), self-discovery, design thinking, practical discussions,
seminars as well as a rich field/hands-on/practical experiences.

Opportunities: I believe studying at UWA will help me to gain deeper knowledge

to promote change at the individual, community, and policy levels and assist
people to create positive outcomes. After thorough research and discussion with
many people concerning my higher studies, I found that Australia is the best place
to study. Australia’s education system is recognized worldwide and maintains high
standards. Learning in such a place will boost my career perspective.  Apart from
this, the safe, secure and peaceful environment makes it an ideal study destination
for an international student like me. I am eager to experience diversity in Australia
by networking with multi-cultural peer groups. I will also get a chance to
exchange thoughts and ideas with people from different nationalities and cultural
orientations. I am sure, all these experiences will be learning for a lifetime.

studies as it is among the top-ranked international universities with ranks third in
the state of Victoria and twelfth university in Australia. Being the largest campus
in the Southern Hemisphere, the university offers many facilities such as the

there are various sporting and recreation facilities such as indoor stadiums,
swimming pools, playing fields, gym and training facilities for football. Apart from
all these facilities, what attracts me to the university is its well-structured

processes, and information technology, thereby improving productivity, decision
making, problem-solving, communicating, and coordinating. This specialized
learning will further guide me to take an important decision in the industry and
implement the innovative process in my country.
