Rizal Lifeworks Chapter8
• The people of San Diego are busy preparing for the festivities to come, while Nor Juan
supervises the workmen laying the cornerstone and building the foundation of the
proposed school building.
• During the high mass, Elias approaches Ibarra to warn him of the plot to kill him.
• In the ceremony on the site of the school, the derrick falls upon Ibarra. Elias saves him and
the yellow man dies.
• Padre Damaso arrives as the guests toast Ibarra for his achievement.
• After hearing the praises about Ibarra, Padre Damaso belittles hims
and insults Don Rafael’s (Ibarra’s late father) honor.
• This triggers Ibarra, making him launch onto Padre Damaso, pointing
a knife to him.
• Maria Clara snatches the knife from Ibarra’s hand, he then flees the
scene from embarrasment.
• Doña Victorina is a Filipina social climber who desperately acts like a 'Spaniard
Lady' who married Don Tiburcio for financial support. Once they got married,
she urged him to pretend as a doctor.
• Padre Damaso agrees with Doña Victorina and also sponsored Linares wooing
Maria Clara, but she didn’t accept this because she loved Ibarra.
• Doña Victorina takes offense to the sight of Doña Consolacion, the vulgar mistress of the
Spanish alferez, smoking a cigar by the window.
• The two women start exchanging insults and almost get into a fight that is averted by the
arrival of the Alferez and Padre Salvi.
• In one of these letters, Elias finds that Ibarra's great-grandfather was the
Spanish Merchant who had blamed his grandfather for arson.
• When Ibarra shows up in Capitan Tiago's house to meet Maria Clara, shots
were suddenly fired in the street-- the said attack had started.
• Seeing what has happened, Elias enters Ibarra’s house, and intentionally sets a
fire to destroy any evidence that could implicate Ibarra in the failed attack.
• Maria Clara explained that in exchange for these letters was a letter
from her late mother, Pia Alba. In that letter, she discovers that her
real father was Padre Damaso.
• The soldiers fired at the swimming Elias, who was hit and sank. Ibarra was able to
escape.
• Meanwhile, Basilio mourns her mother in the forest owned by the Ibarras. Then
suddenly, the wounded Elias staggered onto him and ordered Basilio to make a pyre on
which their bodies (Elias’ and Sisa’s bodies) would be burnt to ashes.
• Maria Clara enters the Sta. Clara convent, where Padre Salvi regularly preaches and holds a significant office.
• Capitan Tiago quits going to church and is presently addicted to opium and gambling.
• The Alferez who has been advanced as a second lieutenant, returns to Spain, leaving his wife, Doña Consolacion, behind.
• Doña Victorina still attempts to live the life of a Spanish lady, while her cousin, Linares dies of dysentery.
• Two Spanish guards see an insane nun standing at the highest point of the Sta. Clara convent during a raging storm.
⚬ At the point when the authorities attempt to examine the nun's case, the abbess disallows the request, invoking the name of
Religion and the Holy Statutes.
• Salome waits for Elias in her nipa hut near the lake.
Summary
• When the two finally get to meet, Salome tells Elias of her plan to
move to Mindoro and live with her family members, and requests that
he go with her.
• Among the most notable praises of Noli Me Tangere was from Rizal’s close
friend, Ferdinand Blumentritt.
⚬ He congratulated Rizal in a letter, saying "Your work, as we Germans say, has
been written with the blood of the heart, and so the heart also speaks.”
• In London, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor – a Filipino patriot and lawyer who had
been exiled due to his complicity in the Cavite Mutiny of 1972, read Noli Me
Tangere avidly and was also impressed by Rizal.
⚬ He wrote to him on May 3, 1887, saying that every Filipino patriot who
reads his book will be inspired and regard it as a masterpiece.
