IBARRA CONSULTS PILOSOPO TASIO ABOUT THE


SCHOOL BUILDING HE PLANS TO BUILD.

• Ibarra notices Pilosopo Tasio writing a book in Hieroglyphics...


⚬ "Not all were asleep in the night of our ancestors!"

• Pilosopo Tasio advices not to pursue this unless he earns the


favor of the church and government.

• The construction of this school building takes place anyway,


and is supervised by the architect Nor Juan.

NOVEMBER 11, TOWN FIESTA
Synopsis of Noli OF SAN DIEGO

IT WAS THE EVE OF SAN DIEGO’S ANNUAL FIESTA IN HONOR OF ITS


PATRON SAINT DIEGO DE ALCALA.

• The people of San Diego are busy preparing for the festivities to come, while Nor Juan
supervises the workmen laying the cornerstone and building the foundation of the
proposed school building.

• During the high mass, Elias approaches Ibarra to warn him of the plot to kill him.

• In the ceremony on the site of the school, the derrick falls upon Ibarra. Elias saves him and
the yellow man dies.

CRISOSTOMO IBARRA HOSTS A
Synopsis of Noli DINNER PARTY
IBARRA HOSTS A PARTY UNDER A DECORATED KIOSK. ALL OF SAN
DIEGO’S IMPORTANT PEOPLE ARE IN ATTENDANCE EXCEPT PADRE
DAMASO.

• Padre Damaso arrives as the guests toast Ibarra for his achievement.

• After hearing the praises about Ibarra, Padre Damaso belittles hims
and insults Don Rafael’s (Ibarra’s late father) honor.

• This triggers Ibarra, making him launch onto Padre Damaso, pointing
a knife to him.

• Maria Clara snatches the knife from Ibarra’s hand, he then flees the
scene from embarrasment.

AFTER IBARRA’S VIOLENT
Synopsis of Noli OUTBURST

IBARRA’S ATTACK ON PADRE DAMASO PRODUCED TWO RESULTS:


(1) his enagement to Maria Clara was broken and (2) he was
excommunicated (social Isolation).

• The Governor-general revokes these punishments


placed upon Ibarra and advises Capitan Tiago to
move on with Ibarra and Maria Clara’s wedding
engagement.

Synopsis of Noli MARIA CLARA FALLS ILL

CAPITAN TIAGO INVITES DOCTOR TIBURCIO DE ESPADAÑA AND HIS


WIFE, DOÑA VICTORINA, TO STAY WITH THEM AS THE DOCTOR
TREATS MARIA CLARA, WHO IS STILL ILL. 

• Doña Victorina is a Filipina social climber who desperately acts like a 'Spaniard
Lady' who married Don Tiburcio for financial support. Once they got married,
she urged him to pretend as a doctor.

• Doña Victorina introduces Linares, the cousin of Don Tiburcio, to Capitan


Tiago and underhandedly suggested that he would be a good match for Maria
Clara.
⚬ Linares is a penniless and jobless, fortune hunter who came to the
Philippines in search of a rich Filipino heiress.

• Padre Damaso agrees with Doña Victorina and also sponsored Linares wooing
Maria Clara, but she didn’t accept this because she loved Ibarra.

THE FIGHT OF DOÑA VICTORINA
Synopsis of Noli AND DOÑA CONSOLACION

DOÑA VICTORINA AND DON TIBURCIO PASS BY THE HOUSE OF THE


ALFEREZ.

• Doña Victorina takes offense to the sight of Doña Consolacion, the vulgar mistress of the
Spanish alferez, smoking a cigar by the window.

• The two women start exchanging insults and almost get into a fight that is averted by the
arrival of the Alferez and Padre Salvi.

Synopsis of Noli THE STORY OF ELIAS

ELIAS MEETS IBARRA AT THE LAKESIDE TO DISCUSS SEVERAL


IMPORTANT MATTERS.
• Elias tries to convince Ibarra to assert his influence to make radical reforms in the Spanish
government. Ibarra refuses, this in return, frustrates Elias. Ibarra notices this, and Elias explains
that his advocacy stems from personal experiences. This leads to Elias narrating his life story.

THE ATTACK ON SAN DIEGO
Synopsis of Noli AND IBARRA’S CAPTURE

PADRE SALVI WARNS THE ALFEREZ ABOUT AN IMPENDING


ATTACK ON THE TOWN.
• Elias alerts Ibarra of the imminent attack on the town that will be accused of
him. He assists Ibarra to dispose of letters that could implicate him.

• In one of these letters, Elias finds that Ibarra's great-grandfather was the
Spanish Merchant who had blamed his grandfather for arson.

• When Ibarra shows up in Capitan Tiago's house to meet Maria Clara, shots
were suddenly fired in the street-- the said attack had started.

• Ibarra returns to his house, and is arrested by the Guardia Civil.

• Seeing what has happened, Elias enters Ibarra’s house, and intentionally sets a
fire to destroy any evidence that could implicate Ibarra in the failed attack.

CRISOSTOMO IBARRA AND
Synopsis of Noli MARIA CLARA’S FAREWELL

ELIAS HELPED IBARRA ESCAPE FROM PRISON AND JUMPED ON


A BANCA LOADED WITH ZACATE (GRASS).

• Ibarra secretly stopped at the house of Capitan Tiago to bid farewell


to Maria Clara.

• Maria Clara apologizes to Ibarra for surrendering his letters to her


to the Spanish authorities who used them as proof against him.
Ibarra forgave her.

• Maria Clara explained that in exchange for these letters was a letter
from her late mother, Pia Alba. In that letter, she discovers that her
real father was Padre Damaso.

IBARRA’S ESCAPE AND ELIAS’
Synopsis of Noli SACRIFICE
AFTER SAYING GOODBYE TO MARIA CLARA, IBARRA GOT BACK
TO THE BANCA. HE AND ELIAS TRAVELED UP THE PASIG RIVER
TOWARD LAGUNA DE BAY.
• A police boat, with the Guardia Civil on board, pursue Elias and Ibarra on the lake. Elias
jumps into the river to mislead the pursuers, thus saving Ibarra.

• The soldiers fired at the swimming Elias, who was hit and sank. Ibarra was able to
escape.

• Meanwhile, Basilio mourns her mother in the forest owned by the Ibarras. Then
suddenly, the wounded Elias staggered onto him and ordered Basilio to make a pyre on
which their bodies (Elias’ and Sisa’s bodies) would be burnt to ashes.

• It was Christmas Eve when Basilio prepared the funeral pyre.


⚬ As Elias takes his last breath, he says: “I die without seeing the dawn brighten over
my native land! You, who have it to see, welcome it and forget not those who have
fallen during the night!"

Synopsis of Noli THE EPILOGUE

THE NOVEL ENDS WITH AN EPILOGUE THAT RECOUNTS WHAT


HAPPENED TO THE OTHER CHARACTERS.
• Padre Damaso is reassigned as parish priest to a far-off province but is discovered dead the following day.

• Maria Clara enters the Sta. Clara convent, where Padre Salvi regularly preaches and holds a significant office.

• Capitan Tiago quits going to church and is presently addicted to opium and gambling.

• The Alferez who has been advanced as a second lieutenant, returns to Spain, leaving his wife, Doña Consolacion, behind.

• Doña Victorina still attempts to live the life of a Spanish lady, while her cousin, Linares dies of dysentery.

• Two Spanish guards see an insane nun standing at the highest point of the Sta. Clara convent during a raging storm.
⚬ At the point when the authorities attempt to examine the nun's case, the abbess disallows the request, invoking the name of
Religion and the Holy Statutes.

The Missing Chapter
of Noli
IN THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF NOLI ME TANGERE,
THERE WAS A CHAPTER ENTITLED "ELIAS AND SALOME"
WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CHAPTER 25.

• Salome waits for Elias in her nipa hut near the lake.

Summary
• When the two finally get to meet, Salome tells Elias of her plan to
move to Mindoro and live with her family members, and requests that
he go with her.

• Elias refuses, since he doesn't want Salome to be entangled with his


misfortunes. He urges her to live a good life and marry a noteworthy
man who deserves her.

• Elias breaks their embrace and leaves with a heavy heart.

Rizal's Friends Praise
Noli
THE FRIENDS OF RIZAL HAILED THE NOVEL, PRAISING IT
IN GLOWING COLORS. AS TO BE EXPECTED. RIZAL'S
ENEMIES CONDEMNED IT.

• Among the most notable praises of Noli Me Tangere was from Rizal’s close
friend, Ferdinand Blumentritt.
⚬ He congratulated Rizal in a letter, saying "Your work, as we Germans say, has
been written with the blood of the heart, and so the heart also speaks.”

• In London, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor – a Filipino patriot and lawyer who had
been exiled due to his complicity in the Cavite Mutiny of 1972, read Noli Me
Tangere avidly and was also impressed by Rizal.
⚬ He wrote to him on May 3, 1887, saying that every Filipino patriot who
reads his book will be inspired and regard it as a masterpiece.
