EVALUATION
Direction:Explain Filipino artists’ roles and identify their contributions to the
following contemporary art forms:
o LITERATURE
a. Amado V. Hernandez
- He was a Filipino writer and labor leader who was known for his
criticism of social injustices in the Philippines and was later imprisoned
for his involvement in the communist movement. He was the central
figure in a landmark legal case that took 13 years to settle.
b. José Garcia Villa
- The Anchored Angel, The Emperor's New Sonnet, Footnote to Youth.
c. Cirilo F. Bauista
- One of the last living iconic writers of his generation, Bautista wrote
poetry, fiction and essays. His best known work is the epic poetry trilogy
“The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus,” made up of the “The Archipelago
(1970), “Telex Moon” (1981) and “Sunlight on Broken Stones” (1999).
o FILM AND BROADCAST ART
a Ronald Allan K. Poe
- Known as the the King of Kings of Philippine Movies. At the peak of his
fame, Fernando Poe Sr. was hailed as the King of All Stars—“Hari ng
mga Bituin.” He was in the top triumvirate of 1930s to 50s male screen
legends, with Rogelio de la Rosa and Leopoldo Salcedo.
 Lamberto V. Avellana
- Director for theater and film, has the distinction of being called “The
Boy Wonder of Philippine Movies” as early as 1939. He was the first to
use the motion picture camera to establish a point-of-view, a move that
revolutionized the techniques of film narration.
 Vilma Santos
- The only actress who won three consecutive years as best actress in the
Urian awards (the country's film critics) for her movies, Relasyon
(1982), Broken Marriage (1983), and Sister Stella L. (1984). She has
never won a single best actress award from her movies directed by an ace
director, the late Lino Brocka.

o ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND ALLIED ARTS


a. Pablo Antonio
- Antonio's major works include the following: Far Eastern University
Administration and Science buildings; Manila Polo Club; Ideal Theater;
Lyric Theater; Galaxy Theater; Capitan Luis Gonzaga Building;
Boulevard-Alhambra (now Bel-Air) apartments; Ramon Roces
Publications Building (now Guzman Institute of Electronics).
b. Leandro V. Locsin
- Church of the Holy Sacrifice, University of the Philippines, Diliman,
1955. Ozamiz City Cathedral, 1960. Manila Memorial Park Chapel,
Paranaque, 1965 (renovated in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2010 & 2020). Doña
Corazon L. Montelibano Chapel, University of St. La Salle, Bacolod,
1965
c. Ildefonso P Santos
- The father of Philippine landscape architecture, Ildefonso Paez Santos,
or IP Santos as he was known, created some of the best-loved urban
spaces in the Philippines. Landscape architecture, which deals with
parks, plazas, and green spaces, was a little-considered element of urban
planning in the first half of the 20th century. However, Santos changed
that, carrying out pioneering work that, after four decades in the
profession, led him to become National Artist for Architecture in 2006.

o FASHION DESIGN

a. Michael Cinco
- Michael Cinco is best known for his fabulous couture gowns. His designs
exude class and elegance, that’s why a lot of celebrities, local and
international, seek him to design their gowns.
b. Kermit Tesoro
- The Avant Garde shoe designer, Kermit Tesoro became popular because
of his crazy and unique designs. One of his clients is mother monster,
Lady Gaga.
c. Kenneth Cobonpue
- Kenneth is a multi-awarded furniture designer. He is most famous as
“rattan’s first virtuoso”, for his best-selling rattan pieces. Some of his
clients are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Queen Rania of Jordan, and
Queen Sophia of Spain.

VI. ENRICHMENT
1. Cite Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan or the National Living Treasure Artists and their
contributions in the Philippine Contemporary Art.
- Gawad sa Manlilikhang Bayan or the National Living Treasure Award is conferred on
Filipinos who are at the forefront of the practice preservation, and promotion of the nation's
traditional folk arts. Objectives to honor and support traditional folk artists and to see to it
that their skills and crafts are preserve.
